The Courant Research Centre "Education and Religion from Early Imperial Roman Times to the Classical Period of Islam - EDRIS" at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is currently inviting applications for
one full-time post-doctoral research position
EDRIS is an interdisciplinary centre with the objective to investigate educational concepts and methods with regard to their interaction with religious beliefs from the Early Imperial Roman Empire to the Classical Period of Islam. Work will be carried out by three junior research groups.
The position will be part of the third junior research group: "Revelation, Reason, and Identity: Education in Early and Classical Islam" (7th-13th centuries CE) analyzing the interdependencies between the teaching of Qur'an and its exegesis in addition to the teaching of history and the emergence of early Muslim group identities. The primary focus lies on the function of teaching in these fields and on parallels or dependencies with the pre-Islamic and late Antique world, as well as on the development of educational institutions in the pre-madrasa period and Islamic intellectual theories and their precursors in Late Antiquity. Project proposals (including a project's schedule) should focus on one of these issues.
Excellent young researchers will mainly pursue their individual research projects within the research group. Applications from scholars of relevant disciplines, such as Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, Studies in Late Antiquity, and Christianity in the Near East are welcome. The successful candidate will have a strong research background as demonstrated by an excellent doctorate degree, respectively. Please provide two letters of recommendation. Interest in interdisciplinary work is essential. Permanent presence in Göttingen is expected, in order to ensure active scholarly interaction among the research groups of the Centre.
The position will start as soon as possible and initially last for two years with the possibility of extension. Salarie is in accordance with the German state regulated public service salary scale (E 13 TV-L, 50 % E13 TV-L, respectively). The University of Göttingen actively seeks to foster career opportunities for female scholars and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply. Candidates with disabilities who are equally qualified for the position will receive special consideration.
Applications should contain the usual documents (such as CV, project proposal, publication list, two letters of recommendation) and must be submitted by March 1st, 2010 to Prof. Dr. Jens Scheiner, Courant Forschungszentrum EDRIS, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Nikolausberger Weg 23, 37073 Göttingen.
Please note: the documents cannot be returned and will be destroyed at
