The Global Young Academy (GYA) was founded in 2010 with the vision to be the voice of young scientists around the world. The GYA empowers early-career researchers to lead international and interdisciplinary initiatives and projects, and to engage in intergenerational dialogue by developing and mobilising talent from six continents. Its purpose is to promote reason and inclusiveness in global decision-making. Members are chosen for their demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and commitment to service. The GYA has 200 members selected for 5 year terms and a growing network of alumni from around the world and across the disciplines. The academy will be hosted at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from January 2017 on. The GYA is receiving core-funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is supported by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP). The GYA has also benefits from project funding from a variety of other donors and partners.
The Project Officer is responsible for managing the GYA membership activities, projects, working groups and events. Together with a second Project officer and the voluntary Theme Coordinators from the GYA membership she or he facilitates coordination and interaction in and among the various GYA Themes, working groups, projects and other activities; answers their needs and concerns; follows up on their progress; gives feedback and presents new opportunities for engagement. The project officer also manages the financial support for the membership activities. She or he is also a facilitator for the growing number of national young academies and for their cooperation. In addition, she or he coordinates the organization of major GYA events, including the Annual General Meeting, held alternating between developing and developed countries. The working language of the GYA as well as of all its publications is English; communication with the German hosts and donors is in German. The GYA offers a vibrant international and intercultural environment with committed early-career researchers working across disciplines and continents and the opportunity to build and support high-level networks.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Support for projects and activities of the GYA members, including administrative and organizational support, coordination, fundraising, proposal writing and organization of meetings and events, small-scale scientific support
• Monitoring of progress of GYA activities and reporting
• Management of the internal financial support for the working groups and projects
• Organization of local, regional and global events, often in cooperation with other international or national institutions
• Support for the international young academy movement
• The preparation, organizations and documentation of the Annual General Assembly meeting of the GYA
• General support of the GYA Office.
• Academic qualification, at least with a master’s degree
• At least 3 years of relevant job experience, ideally in science management and/ or international cooperation
• Fluent command of English and German
• Proven experience with financial management
• Teamwork abilities and experience
• Intercultural competence and experience, we especially encourage applicants with experience in either South Asia or South-East Asia or Africa
• Ideally experience in working with a membership based organisation
• Readiness to travel internationally
The payment will be based on E 13 according to the German public wage agreement. The working time is 29, 25 hours per week (75%) for part - time or in fulltime 39 hours per week. The contract will be limited to the term congruent with the current core-funding of the GYA (ending on 31 December 2020). We expect possibilities for expansion and prolongation depending on future funding.
