GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung / Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe GmbH
We are looking for the next Administrative Managing Director of the GSI and FAIR laboratories in Darmstadt (Germany). Currently, these are two distinct
laboratories, but operated in a highly integrated way by a common Management Board Team. FAIR is a German company owned by a worldwide consortium
of shareholder countries, which is building one of the largest and most ambitious scientific infrastructures worldwide, while GSI is a 50 year-old German
laboratory, embedded in the Helmholtz Association. The job offered has therefore a twofold German and international nature, both essential for the suc-
cess of the goals of the laboratory, which places itself at the frontiers of world science
With about 1,400 employees and an annual operation budget of approx. 110 million EUR, the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH (GSI) is
the German national laboratory for hadron and nuclear physics as well as other research disciplines exploiting high-energy heavy ion beams. GSI operates
a large research infrastructure, comprising unique accelerator and experimental facilities, a high power laser system and high performance computing
facilities. GSI is an institution of the Helmholtz Association and is funded to 90 percent by the federal government and to 10 percent by the federal states
of Hesse, Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate.
In the coming years, the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), one of the largest research projects worldwide, will be built on, and adjacent
to, the premises of GSI. FAIR consists of several accelerator and storage rings with up to 1,100 meters in circumference, two linear accelerators and about
3.5 kilometers beam lines between the accelerators and the experiments. The existing GSI accelerators will serve as injectors. GSI also contributes the
majority of the FAIR accelerator components as well as significant input to the FAIR experiments. The construction of the new facility started in 2010 and
is planned to be completed by 2025. In the subsequent FAIR operating phase, there are up to 3000 scientific users expected to perform experiments at
FAIR each year.
FAIR is realized in international cooperation by ten partner countries: Germany, Finland, France, India, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia and Sweden, as
well as the United Kingdom as an associate partner. The FAIR GmbH was founded in 2010 with the partner countries as shareholders for the construction
and operation of FAIR. The FAIR GmbH is designed as a project management company and has currently about 55 employees. Germany holds about 70 %
of the shares in FAIR GmbH and is represented by the GSI GmbH as a shareholder.
Both companies, FAIR GmbH and GSI GmbH, are managed by a joint Management Board consisting of the Scientific Managing Director, the Administrative
Managing Director and the Technical Managing Director. Within the legal limits, both FAIR GmbH and GSI GmbH are closely networked and work together
in all scientific, technical and administrative aspects.

// The Administrative Managing Director (f/m/d) is one of three legal representatives of FAIR GmbH and GSI GmbH. The Management of the two companies
is a joint responsibility of the Administrative Managing Director (f/m/d) with the Scientific and Technical Managing Directors. The job profile includes the
reporting to the FAIR Council being the international shareholders‘ meeting for FAIR and the GSI Supervisory Board as well as the close coordination and
collaboration with the international shareholders, with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art
(HMWK) as the German grant authorities in the country of residence of both companies.
// The Administrative Managing Director (f/m/d) is responsible for the entire administrative area of both companies including finance, controlling, human
resources, procurement, technology transfer, legal matters, data protection and IT security. Furthermore, the responsibilities of the Administrative Managing
Director (f/m/d) include the areas of organizational development and campus development including plant & facility engineering as well as facility management.
In particular, here are challenging tasks with regard to the preparation and design of the transition from the FAIR construction phase to the FAIR operation
phase. In the area of campus development, extensive infrastructure measures are to be implemented over the next few years. This includes major
refurbishment measures of buildings and technical services, as well as new constructions to cover the increased need of laboratories and office spaces
during the FAIR operation phase.
// In accordance to the challenging tasks, applicants (f/m/d) should have an academic economic or legal degree or have comparable experience through
many years of relevant professional activities. Needed is a proven leader with high communication skills. Several years of experience in leading a science
organization/research institution in the national and/or international environment is required. It is expected that the candidate (f/m/d) will represent GSI
and FAIR well in their international and national contexts and has the necessary intercultural skills. This requires very good language skills in German and
// Due to the joint responsibility of all three business areas for the success of FAIR/GSI, the candidate (f/m/d) must understand his/her role within the
Management Board as part of a team and has to have the ability to represent the administrative, commercial and infrastructural framework and concerns
adequately. The Administrative Managing Director (f/m/d) is appointed for a term of five years. A reappointment is possible. An adequate compensation
with the position and requirements up to grade B 6 Bundesbesoldungsgesetz (BBesG) is offered. FAIR and GSI support the vocational development
