About the position
At our
Department of Information Security and Communication Technology we have a vacant permanent position as associate professor in communication networks.
The design, development, adaptation and customization of architectures and systems towards critical services are fundamental for fulfilling stringent functional and non-functional requirements. The virtually unlimited possibilities of upcoming architectures and systems like 6G or TSN, resulting from the advances in hardware and software as well as the convergence of computing, communication, and control, render classical ways of for vertical service integration, operation, and management impractical. Such services, with specific emphasis on critical services for society, include but are not limited to verticals like Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), Smart Grids (electricity, water), Manufacturing, Public Services and Health, Financial Systems, Internet of Things (IoT).
The position is announced with a particular focus on communication network architecture and systems for mobile and transport networks, including wired and wireless access, aggregation, and core networks.
The main responsibilities of the position are teaching, research, innovation and dissemination. The position involves specific responsibilities for articulating and advancing the Department’s teaching, research, innovation and dissimination capacities.
You will be assigned to our discipline in communication technology and will report to the Head of Discipline.
The workplace will be in Trondheim.
Duties of the position
The associate professor is expected to
- Contribute towards research and research-based education in communication networks
- Take part in interdisciplinary research collaborations, both within NTNU and with other national and international partners
- Publish research results in high impact professional journals and conferences
- Secure research funding from national and international funding agencies
- Contribute to the developmen of the course portfolio at undergraduate and graduate level in communication technology
- Educate and supervise students at BSc and MSc level
- Supervise PhDs and postdoctoral fellowships
- Drive innovation processes
- Disseminate relevant parts of his/her research to both a wider audience (public outreach)
- Participate in the management of research, education, and other relevant academic activities in agreement with the department
Interdisciplinary collaboration and interaction with other research groups inside or outside NTNU is strongly encouraged.
Required qualifications
You need to demonstrate a strong background in networking, network architecture, and systems including interaction with critical services for the Society. Moreover, you should have a solid understanding of the network mechanisms and algorithms for the control, data, and management planes. Experience with optimisation and machine learning techniques for network customization is also desirable.
You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of communication technology, as outlined in
the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.
- Your PhD or comparable academic work must be within in communication technology, computer science, or a comparable relevant field, preferably with a focus on communication networks architecture and systems.
- If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted or is close to be submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. In this case, documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position.
- Good written and oral English language skills.
You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
New employees, who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment, are required to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the
Course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU within three years.
Preferred qualifications
Candidates fulfilling the required qualifications (above) will be further evaluated including also the following criteria:
- Experience with leading research and supervising students at bachelor, master, and doctoral level
- Experience with higher education teaching
- Experience in creating and operating a laboratory infrastructure relevant for the research area
- Experience with initiating and leading research projects and writing grant proposals
- Experience with industrial/external/international collaboration
- Good written and oral Norwegian or Scandinavian language skills
- Personal qualities

We offer
Salary and conditions
As a Associate Professor (code 1011 ) you are normally paid from gross NOK 615 000 – NOK 775 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning
State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who, by assessment of the application and attachment, are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

- A research plan (no longer than 1500 words),
- Details of projects for which you have served as project manager, including information on financing, duration, and scope,
- Names and contact information for three relevant referees.
Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.
In the evaluation, which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience as well as personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
