The research groups of Arndt von Haeseler and Jörg Menche at the Max Perutz Labs at the University of Vienna at the Department of Structural and Computational Biology are recruiting a highly motivated joint PhD student. The Max Perutz Labs are a joint venture of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. Located at the Campus Vienna Biocenter the Max Perutz Labs are home to over 450 scientists from over 30 nations organized in 62 groups working in the field of molecular biology.
You will join a team working in the field of network science, systems biology, and complex systems. A special focus is the development of network-based methods for the integration and analysis of large and diverse biomedical data. The preferred candidate has a proven ability to independently design and implement cutting-edge computational methods for network science to study the diverse aspects of complex biological systems. Experience with handling large datasets and next-generation sequencing data is required. It would be an advantage that the successful candidate will have an in-depth understanding of web technologies such as JavaScript frameworks and Python frameworks such as Flask, as well as experience in building or extending existing web-based tools and experience in methods of data visualization.
The candidate is further expected to be willing to teach and can supervise students. Teaching experience is therefore a plus. The position is also involved with international collaborations. The candidate will participate in research, teaching to the extent of the collective agreement provisions and administration - contributing to research projects / scientific studies - and contributing to publications / scientific articles. Also, the successful candidate is expected to complete her*his dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
The employment contract is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer declares non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Participation in research, teaching and administration:
- Participation in research projects / research studies

- We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
Profile:
- Professional competence training in Systems Biology with focus on biological networks
- Methodological competence Proven competence of network science, image analysis, and working with large-scale databases. - Experience working with different -omics datasets and genetic screens
- Didactic competence Experience with course organization, teaching and assignments/homework preparation
- High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing - Excellent command of written and spoken English
- IT user skills - Ability to work both independently and in a team.
- Experience working with international collaboration partners and working on several projects simultaneously.
- You need to have successfully passed the VBC-PhD selection
- In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have:
