Director (m/f) Office of Technology Transfer
The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) is the major strategic initiative of the German
Federal Ministry for Science and Education and the City of Berlin to build an
international research institute with a focus on translational medicine. It combines
the excellences of its founding institutes, the "Charité - Universitätsmedizin
Berlin" and the "Max Delbrück Center (MDC) for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz
Association". BIH applies translational research and precision medicine to
enhance the scientific exchange between biomedical basic research, clinical
research, and clinical application. It aims to utilize new scientific results and to
promote technological developments for new diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive
approaches for medicine and public health (www.bihealth.org/en).
The BIH Executive Board views Technology Transfer as a key driver for innovation.
A joint BIH/Charité-Technology Transfer Office will be established and supported
with substantial personal and financial resources. The successful applicant will
head this joint office.
The Director of the BIH/Charité Office of Technology Transfer will lead all Technology
Transfer activities of the BIH and the Charité. He or she will lead a growing
team of up to 20 highly skilled individuals (joint BIH-Charité team and external
hires) and will report directly to the member of the BIH Executive Board being
responsible for Technology Transfer. In addition, he or she will lead and manage
the operational cooperation with the MDC on Technology Transfer.
The Director of the BIH Office of Technology Transfer will represent BIH and
the Charité in all aspects of Technology Transfer, e. g. internal scouting forvalue
creating discoveries, IP protection and IP exploitation, business development
including strategic alliance management, business model innovation (in particular
in digital health), and active spin out support (incl. fund raising).
Together with the BIH Executive Board Members, the Director of the BIH Office
of Technology Transfer will be responsible for developing the Technology Transfer
strategy, the operation of internal funding instruments (e. g. for validation of technologies)
as well as negotiations and deal making with industrial partners, venture
capitalists and spin out teams. He or she will be as well responsible for the
acquisition of third party funding (private and public) to further strengthen the
BIH-Charité internal development pipeline or spin out activities.
The successful candidate must have an industrial background, deep know-how in
digital and in health, must possess a sound knowledge and expertise in the venturing
business, in license and spin out deal making. He or she is well experienced
in negotiations with international research partners and with industrial partners
from pharma, medtech and digital health in particular. Further requirements include:
senior management experience, outstanding leadership and communication
skills, excellent knowledge of English; a demonstrated willingness to learn
German or proficiency in that language; entrepreneurial spirit.
