The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.
With a starting date as soon as possible, Department 8.2, Biosignals, is looking for a candidate to fill the following position at PTB’s Berlin-Charlottenburg site for a duration of two years:
Doctoral candidate or postdoc in the field of quantum sensor systems
for medical purposes
up to Remuneration Group 14
TVöD Bund
○ full-time (39 hours/week) ○ fixed-term contract
If you are a doctoral candidate, your remuneration will be paid in accordance with Remuneration Group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %) and your contract will be limited to 3 years.
Your tasks:
As part of the team of
Working Group 8.21, Optical Magnetometry, you will design and assemble a quantum sensor system for imaging ultra-low magnetic fields.
The system will be based on the principle of optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). A suitable arrangement of laser light beams and a spatially structured spin
ensemble will enable spatially resolved magnetic field imaging. As part of your work, you will employ this system to non-invasively measure biomagnetic fields,
arising for instance from muscular activity (magnetomyography), or to localize magnetic nanoparticles.
Your tasks will include:
- Developing and assembling a multi-channel quantum sensor system (beam-shaping optics, lasers, spectroscopy cells, optoelectronics)
- Optimizing the individual components of the system in cooperation with national and international partners
- Multi-channel field recordings and the integration of field reconstruction methods
- Presenting the results at national and international conferences, and publishing them in scientific journals
Your profile:
- University degree (master/diploma) in experimental physics or a comparable engineering subject with the grade “very good” (postdocs: doctorate)
- You are interested in developing and applying quantum sensor systems.
- You are highly committed and able to perform goal-oriented scientific work.
- Good knowledge of and experimental experience in atomic and quantum physics, laser spectroscopy, optical imaging or related fields would be of advantage.
- Ideally, you have programming skills, e.g., in Python, C++, Matlab, Mathematica.
- You are physically fit to work in an optics laboratory.
- You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills
- You have a very good command of both spoken and written English.
- You are willing to travel within Germany and abroad within the scope of your assignment
