The following position is available at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in cooperation with the Medical Faculty Heidelberg at Heidelberg University:
Full Professorship (W3) for "Translational Pediatric Glioma Research" (f/m/d)
(Ref-No. 2023-0022)
Neuro-oncology represents a central strategic focus of biomedical research and patient care at DKFZ and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University. To significantly enhance the cure rate of children suffering from brain tumors, we are looking for an internationally recognized scientist with a background in the field of characterization and modeling of pediatric gliomas and other pediatric brain tumor entities as well as the development of personalized medicine applications.
The scientific focus of the professorship will be the application of cutting-edge “omics”- technologies to interrogate the biological underpinnings of pediatric brain tumors. Major goals include identification and functional characterization of driver mutations, resistance mechanisms, characterization of microenvironment-tumor interactions, further development of methylation-based tumor classification, and development of faithful in vivo models. Clinical translation of these findings through the development of molecular diagnostic methods and pre-clinical studies are expected. A central role in the precision oncology program INFORM is strongly desired.
The candidate should have outstanding prior work and a broad range of expertise in the areas of next-generation (DNA/RNA sequencing including single-cell sequencing), epigenetic (DNA methylation, ChIPseq) and functional (CRISPR/Cas9) technologies, the biology and genetics of low-grade and high-grade childhood gliomas, the generation of versatile and predictive models, as well as expertise with regard to precision oncology and innovative studies. A strong record of publications and successful third-party funding applications should be documented.
The division will be integrated into the existing programs at the Hopp-Kindertumorzentrum Heidelberg (KiTZ), a comprehensive Therapy and Research Center for Pediatric Oncology founded as a joint venture between the DKFZ, the University Hospital and the University Heidelberg. Its objective is to pool research and clinical expertise in an internationally visible center dedicated to pediatric malignancies.
The position at the level of a DKFZ Head of Division is endowed with an attractive core funding package including personnel, consumables and investments. In addition, access is given to intramural competitive funding programs. Prerequisites for application are a completed university degree, qualified doctorate and, in accordance with § 47 and § 48 (2) of the Higher Education Law of the state Baden-Württemberg, either a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior group or a comparable academic qualification. The joint appointment follows the “Jülicher Modell”, where the successful candidate will be appointed as a full and life-time professor at Heidelberg University and granted a leave of absence to the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), which will be the employer. Upon fulfillment of the general requirements under civil service law and budgetary law, the appointment to the professorship will normally be made directly on the basis of a lifetime civil servant status (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit).
