The Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources of the University of Freiburg invites
applications for a
Full Professorship (W3) for Forest Growth
(Succession of Prof. Spiecker)
Fulltime position, start date: 01.10.2017
in the Institute of Forest Sciences.
This professorship is also particularly suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.
The applicant is expected to cover in research and teaching the field of forest growth.
This comprises contributions to several relevant research topics such as production
ecology, yield science and carbon balance of forests, and analysis and processoriented
modelling of tree and stand growth, tree-ring analysis, and forest dynamics.
Contributions to related fields of research within and outside the faculty are desired, for
example through collaborations with the Faculty of Biology. A close cooperation with
external research institutions such as the "Forstliche Versuchs- und Forschungsanstalt
Baden-Württemberg" is expected. The applicant should stand out through broad and
internationally recognized research activities in basic and applied research.
The focus of teaching activities will be on BSc programs "Waldwirtschaft und Umwelt
(Forestry and Environment)" and "Umweltnaturwissenschaften (Environmental Sciences)",
on MSc programs "Forstwissenschaften/Forest Sciences", "Umweltwissenschaften/Environmental Sciences" and "European Forestry", as well as contributions
to other study programs of the faculty, e.g. the MSc "Renewable Energy Management".
It is expected that the professor will also assume coordinative roles in these programs.
We are looking for a personality that is internationally recognized in the relevant research
areas and has his/her demonstrated ability for interdisciplinary collaborations,
successful project management and excellent teaching. We expect the development
of an active, nationally and internationally operating research group that is supported
through external funding from public and private sources.

Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, an outstanding
dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience
in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the
German academic system, are expected.
Additional Conditions of employment are:
- Experience and demonstrated excellence (based on peer reviewed publications) in
forest growth research;
- Competence in the acquisition and successful completion of externally funded research
projects and in the establishment of national and international research networks;
- Excellent teaching skills;
- Demonstrated leadership skills, excellent ability to communicate, to work in teams,
to forge cooperation in research and teaching;
- Willingness to participate in management and development process within the faculty
and the university and contribute effectively in university administration
