The Department for Physics at Interfaces of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research seeks an outstanding, highly motivated Master student to design an icing chamber that can be combined with a high resolution microscope. Candidates (m/f) with an excellent Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering or physics to further develop the setup are strongly encouraged to apply.
Ice accretion causes malfunction and breakdown of wind power turbines, icing of aircrafts, ships, antennas, and power lines. Nevertheless, icing and de-icing of surfaces is poorly understood due to lack of microscopic information of the underlying processes close to the surface. The icing properties of surfaces can be quantified by measuring the adhesion force of ice to the surface. To gain more detailed information on the processes close to a surface we aim to design an icing chamber that can be combined with a high resolution microscope. Simultaneously, measurement of the adhesion force should be possible. The candidate is expected to further develop the setup, including the construction of an improved icing chamber that permits to work at temperatures down to -20 °C. A challenge is to minimize temperature gradients. The work will be done in close cooperation with a Postdoc researcher. We expect that the simultaneous measurement of the adhesion strength and the visualization of changes close to the surface will foster our understanding of icing and deicing of surfaces, on cracks formation and propagation and on rupturing of surfaces.
The successful candidate should have a background in mechanical engineering or physics to further develop the setup.
