As a Berlin-based research organisation with a team in Nairobi, Kenya and research sites in Benin, Burkina Faso, Malawi, Madagascar and South Africa, TMG Research gGmbH works on responsible governance and sustainability issues in the areas of sustainable management and responsible governance of land and oceans, food systems, and climate. As an organisation, TMG brings sound knowledge and practical experience in facilitating national, European, and international processes and is dedicated to the analysis and solution of new and complex challenges. TMG’s research projects are developed, conducted and evaluated jointly with actors from science, politics, the private sector and civil society.

We are looking for new colleague to join our Land Governance team and support the development of a dedicated program on climate and land tenure issues. In the Land Governance Team, TMG Research, together with partners, applies a rights-based approach to analyse and explore context-specific solutions to address land tenure insecurity. The topic of responsible land governance is addressed in several projects in Kenya, Malawi, Benin, Madagascar and India.

Your tasks

Desk research

• Research on land tenure topics within the climate change debate, in particular review of the global climate change agenda, such as UNFCCC and UNCBD decisions/frameworks with relevance for land tenure, building on TMG´s work at the UNCCD and UNCBD Conferences of the Parties
• Structured overview of elements in (recent) UNFCCC / UNCBD COP decisions relating to tenure rights and the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities
• Review of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the UNFCCC Paris Agreement with a focus on land tenure to create input for a future work programme on tenure and climate to support the just implementation of the Paris Agreement
• Literature review to gather evidence showing the links between current and planned work of TMG to climate change and biodiversity issues in relation to land

Interviews

• Identification of key experts on land tenure and climate change / land tenure and biodiversity. Expert interviews to verify and/or update existing data and conclusions relating to climate change, biodiversity and land tenure as a contribution to TMG´s work on implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework and building a work programme on Tenure and Climate

Event organization

• Supporting the organization of events with peers, partners, and experts to discuss the findings of the research activities and our future work programme on tenure and climate. Contributing to two sessions at the Annual International LandAc Conference in June 2023

Your profile

• Final stages of Master’s Degree or Master’s degree in Political Science, Sustainability Studies, Development Studies, or a related field 
• Knowledge about the current climate change policy environment (including international climate change agendas, Rio Conventions) and land tenure context 
• Experience working in international teams
• Enthusiasm, flexibility, strong team-spirit and a commitment to working within a dynamic, transdisciplinary organisation
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and good working knowledge of German is required
• Experience with writing short research outputs
