About

The Landau Campus of the University of Koblenz-Landau and Technische Universität Kaiserslautern are in the process of forming a joint university. We are looking for you to help us as early as now to shape the start of our new university in 2023 at the Landau location.

Funded by the Tenure-Track Program of the German federal and state governments (WISNA), the Faculty 7: Natural and Environmental Sciences at the Campus Landau invites applications for

a Junior Professorship (W1) for Biodiversity and Ecology of Plants with tenure track to W2.

The position at iES Landau, Institute for Environmental Sciences is to be filled as soon as possible but no later than May 31, 2023.

Junior professors are appointed as temporary public servants for a period of six years. In the fourth year of employment, their teaching and research performance will be evaluated to give them feedback on their career progress.

A tenure-evaluation will take place at the end of the six-year term of employment. Upon positive evaluation, the junior professor will be appointed to a lifetime W2-professorship, provided that the legal requirements of the Hochschulgesetz (in particular § 50 Abs. 5 S. 6 HochSchG) are met and the general public service requirements are fulfilled.

The  procedures are regulated by the tenure statute (Tenure-Satzung) of the University of Koblenz-Landau (https://www.uni-koblenz-landau.de/de/uni/organisation/verwaltung/abteilungen/stab-spp/satzungen-richtlinien).

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the University of Koblenz-Landau are committed to a policy of intense personal mentoring for students and therefore expect a strong presence of teaching staff at the university.

Your tasks

We are looking for a personality who will enrich research at iES Landau, Institute for Environmental Sciences, in the field of biodiversity, genetics and plant ecology, and who will aim to establish internal and external collaborations. Interdisciplinary research at iES Landau focuses on ecosystems and anthropogenic stressors with an emphasis on aquatic-terrestrial system coupling (https://systemlink.uni-landau.de). We expect the junior professor to represent an area of organismic, plant ecological research using molecular genetic methods. Challenges of global change, such as the protection of biological diversity, the role of the biosphere for regional or global biogeochemical cycles, invasive species, or the effect of climate change or environmental chemicals on ecosystems should be part of their research agenda.

In teaching, the junior professorship is to offer a broad range of botanical and genetic topics, mostly in the Bachelor and Master of Education Biology study programs, on the basis of the curricular standards of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for teacher education. Candidates are expected to cooperate and to coordinate with other colleagues within teacher education and to participate in teaching within the environmental sciences study programs. During the first phase of employment, the teaching load is four hours per week per semester (SWS); after the intermediate evaluation, the teaching load will be six hours per week per semester. Language of instruction is either German or English, depending on the degree program.

Your profile

Applicants have to meet the requirements of § 54 of the Hochschulgesetz (Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act; HochSchG). These include a post-graduate degree, proven pedagogical aptitude, which must be demonstrated separately, as well as special aptitude for scientific work. The latter is typically demonstrated by a candidate’s qualified doctorate and relevant international publications. Successful candidates ideally are internationally recognized and have experience with working abroad as well as with the acquisition and management of third-party funded projects. For teaching within the Bachelor of Education program, very good German skills are required.

The duration of academic activity after completion of the doctorate shall not exceed six years. Applicants are expected to have acquired academic experience at a different university after their doctorate; at the least, they need to have two years of academic experience at an institution other than the University of Koblenz-Landau.

This tenure-track professorship is funded through the WISNA-program and therefore addresses early career researchers. Eligibility under WISNA-criteria is prerequisite for appointment.

Your application

The university is committed to equal employment opportunities and strongly encourages women to apply for the position. Given equivalent qualification and aptitude for the position, female applicants are hired preferentially insofar and as long as underrepresentation persists and unless serious grounds outweigh equal opportunity considerations.

Applicants with disabilities will be considered preferentially as long as they are equally qualified.

Please submit your complete application documents (academic curriculum vitae, certificates and degrees, etc.) as a single pdf-file to bewerbung@uni-koblenz-landau.de no later than 03.06.2022  stating the reference number 26/2022.
