The Faculty IV – Faculty of Science and Technology – of the University of Siegen in the Department
of Mathematics is seeking to appoint a
(W1 LBesG NRW)
in Mathematics Education
with tenure track for a permanent W2 university professorship
as soon as possible.
It is expected from the candidate to have a research profile focusing on intersections in the field of
primary and lower secondary mathematics education. She or he is supposed to meet the research
directions in the field of mathematics education at the University of Siegen:
Conceptual insights (beliefs, etc.) of mathematical contents that pupils acquire while dealing with
different visual materials and manipulatives in mathematics classes,
Knowledge development processes in connection with the use of digital media in mathematics
Individual learning processes in mathematics classes.
Moreover, a cooperation with the research association of MINT didactics (MINTUS) and the center
for teacher training and educational research (ZLB) is desired.
Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to be able to run university courses on
elementary mathematics and didactics of mathematics for prospective primary school and lower
secondary school teachers.
The requirements for the junior professorship are a university degree in mathematics (content
discipline or mathematics teaching qualification), pedagogical aptitude (proven by independent
teaching experience) and the special qualification for scientific work, which is proven by the
quality of a relevant doctorate to one of the research fields mentioned above. Initial academic
achievements that demonstrate a research focus beyond the field of doctoral studies are also
Experience in the acquisition of third-party funds, especially in the context of joint applications, as
well as a commitment in the further development of (third-party funded) projects, as well as the
cooperation with educational institutions and partners in the region are desirable.
The candidate will initially be employed as a fixed-term civil servant (if the statutory civil service
conditions are fulfilled, otherwise as an employee under private law) for 3 years. After a successful
probationary period, the junior professorship will be extended for a further 3 years in the course

Upon the appointment to the junior professorship, the subsequent appointment to a permanent
W2 university professorship is granted on the condition that the tenure evaluation criteria (defined
upon the appointment to the junior professorship) are met during the junior professorship, and
that the scientific and pedagogical aptitude required for the university professorship is given at the
time of the tenure evaluation. The tenure evaluation is carried out as an appointment procedure
for the W2 university professorship in the sixth year of the junior professorship. The permanent W2
professorship will not be advertised. Teaching duties then will be 9 hours a week per semester.
