Jacobs University is a private, state-accredited, English-language research university in Bremen. We are offering Bachelor, Master or PhD programs in three focus areas: Health, Mobility and Diversity. Our principles are first class research and teaching, international diversity and transdisciplinary cooperation. As an international university we attract highly talented and open-minded students from all over the world. Currently, more than 1,200 students from 100 nations live and study on our residential campus.
Our research focuses on the improvement of yeast strains (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) for industrial biotechnology. Current projects aim at the improvement of product yield by the reduction of by-product formation, the extension of yeast's substrate spectrum in order to make use of certain (industrial) waste streams for the generation of value-added products and the improvement of cellular robustness for stresses occurring during industrial processes. We approach these questions by both rational and inverse engineering strategies exploiting the extensive toolbox nowadays available for systems metabolic engineering.
General techniques in microbiology and molecular biology for the engineering of S. cerevisiae (PCR, transformation, gene deletion, CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing, spore dissection, real-time PCR...), analytical methods (HPLC, enzyme assays)
Bachelor of Science degree, excellent background in microbiology and molecular biology (preferably with regard to yeast), good written and verbal communication skills in the English language, team player with good communication skills, highly self-motivated and able to work independently, good time management skills
