Our lab studies mechanisms that control protein synthesis in cardiomyocytes in vivo and in vitro by using the technique of Ribosomal Profiling. Ribosomal Profiling measures protein synthesis rates and it reports on the exact position of translating ribosomes on the transcript. If combined with other high throughput measurements of mRNA abundance, e.g. by RNA-Sequencing, Ribosomal Profiling can directly reveal stress-induced mechanisms of translation regulation.

Worldwide cardiac diseases belong to the top ten causes of death. They are associated with abnormal protein levels independent from the underlying etiology. Protein synthesis/ translation is a highly complex mechanism that is regulated and influenced by many events.
During this master thesis those high throughput methods like RNA-Sequencing as well as standard molecular biological and biochemical techniques will applied in vitro and in vivo in order to further understand translational regulation in cardiomyopathies. Primary cardiomyocytes as well as cell lines can be applied to study cardiomyopathy phenotypes.
