The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by
federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology,
geochemistry and geophysics, thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
Ocean modeller for coastal areas (m/f/d)
Background
Coastal waters are highly dynamic areas with complex abiotic parameters that are continuously changing. Reliable projections of how the physical conditions on the coasts will change in the course of climate change are particularly challenging due to the small-scale hydrodynamic processes. At the same time, abiotic conditions have a direct influence on the geology and biology of coastal waters.
For this reason, the advertised position will deal with the establishment and the continuous improvement of a physical model basis for ensemble modelling of coastal marine ecosystems, with active participation in interdisciplinary studies. Within the framework of the position, the coupling between FESOM-C and the global ocean model FESOM should be addressed. The position requires close collaboration with experts in the field of ocean modelling (e.g. AWI, Hereon, IOW, Geomar, MPI), including working on joint projects.
Within the framework of the position, ocean physics models will be used to study abiotic conditions and hydrodynamics in the North Sea, the polar regions and the Mediterranean Sea.
Tasks
Setting a physical model basis for Ensemble modelling of marine ecosystems
Coupling between FESOM-C and global FESOM
Analysis of abiotic conditions in the coastal waters of the North Sea, the polar regions and the Mediterranean Sea
Modelling of future scenarios under climate change
Linking physical modelling approaches with ecological models
Requirements
PhD in mathematics, physical oceanography or a related subject field
- Extensive experience with the application of coastal ocean models, preferably FESOM-C
- Ability to continuously develop the numerical set of ocean physics models
- Ability to develop and implement interdisciplinary research questions
- Experience in leading model inter-comparison studies
- Experience in the use of ocean models in polar coastal areas
- Very good communication skills
- Good publication background
