Within the Joint German-Russian Project “Nonlinear Empirical Mode Analysis of Complex Systems: Development of General Approach and Applications in
Climate”, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), PIK is offering a
PhD position (m/f/d) in the field of Complex System Science, starting on 01.04.2019.

The position is funded for 3 years. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13. This is a part-time position with a weekly working time of 30 hours per week (75% position). Appointment is conditional on approval by the funding agency.
The project will be conducted as a joint project of scientific groups from Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) headed by Dr. N. Marwan and from the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Nizhny Novgorod headed by Dr. D. Mukhin. The combination of the advanced studies from dynamical systems theory and statistical mechanics require a joint effort of experienced research groups, bridging the gap and cross-fertilizing concepts between physics and geosciences.
development and performance of a multi-scale recurrence analysis as well as reconstruct and investigate climate networks
a close collaboration with the Russian partner (e. g. by research visits) is necessary to fulfil the objectives of this project
Masterdegree in Physics
strong background in complex systems theory and nonlinear dynamics, preferably with experience in the detection of couplings, recurrence analysis, complex networks and climate dynamics
prior experience in interdisciplinary work
ability to possess advanced level expertise in at least one (and preferably more than one) scientific programming languages / environments such as Python, MATLAB, Julia, or C
the ability to work independently and on your own initiative
a methodical and systematic approach
structured and goal-oriented thinking
capacity to familiarise yourself quickly with new topics
creativity and openness to new approaches
a high level of competence in oral and written English
reliability, the ability to cope with stress, and a high level of motivation
willingness to travel for work (project meetings, workshops etc.) and take part in further training
capacity for teamwork
