The Department Complexity Sciences at PIK is offering a
PhD Position (m/f/d)
in the field of theoretical Physics, starting on 01.05.2019 or the earliest possible date.

The position is funded for 3 years. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group
E 13, according to personal qualification.
This is a part-time position with a weekly working time of 30 hours per week. Appointment is conditional on approval by the funding agency.
The position is in the working group on complex infrastructure networks, on the topic of dynamics of renewable power grids, and is part of a joint
German-Chinese Research project funded by DFG. The complex infrastructure networks group at PIK works on understanding the vulnerabilities and chances in complex
networks of societal infrastructure that is changing in the face of climate change. Our primary topic is the study of complex energy networks and their dynamics,
in the context of the ongoing energy transition.
The PhD candidate in the Department of Complexity Science will work in this context on formulating mathematical tools that describe the universal synchronizing behavior
of a large range of energy sources, and to help develop the necessary synchronization theory to analyze the emergent behavior in complex networks of such devices. While
the approach will be based on a theoretical physics perspective, the candidate will work closely with electrical engineers and control theoreticians to ensure that the
resulting work is applicable in the real world.
Develop novel mathematical tools for the analysis and design of renewable power grids
Develop own ideas for research
Close collaboration to research partners in Berlin and China
A degree in Physics, (applied) mathematics, control theory or a comparable subject
Fluent communication in written and spoken English
Prior knowledge of energy systems synchronization or complex networks is not required but a bonus
Willingness to do both, analytical and numerical work
The ability to work independently and on your own initiative
Capacity to familiarise yourself quickly with new topics
