The Institute of Complex Systems (ICS-7), "Biomechanics" conducts fundamental research focused on the biomechanics of mammalian cells and their mechanical interaction
with the environment. Modern methods of cell biophysics and cell biology complemented by biomimetic model systems are used.
The Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-3), "Cognitive Neuroscience" uses behavioural, pharmacological, and neuromodulatory methods to investigate the neural
mechanisms underlying cognitive (dys-)function in healthy subjects and patients suffering from neurological disorders. Functional imaging (PET, MRI) and electrophysiological
methods (EEG, TMS, tDCS) are combined with computational approaches to achieve a better understanding of i) the development of normal brain functions during ageing, ii)
disease-induced dysfunction, and iii) cerebral plasticity and recovery of function. Results help to decode how the human brain enables higher cognition and to develop novel therapeutic approaches.
We are offering a
PhD position - Translational Neurooncology
In collaboration between researchers at ICS-7 and INM-3, the potential of selectively expressed RNA (seRNA) molecules to treat experimental glioma is investigated.
In order to facilitate the translation of this therapeutic approach from bench to bedside, non-invasive in vivo imaging techniques (MRI, PET) are combined with
histological read-outs. You will investigate how intracranial glioma in nude mice are affected by local treatment with seRNA under the supervision of PD. Dr.
Bernd Hoffmann (ICS-7) and Prof. Maria Adele Rueger (INM-3).
Your tasks in detail:
stereotactic injections into the brain of nude mice
non-invasive MRI and PET-imaging of experimental animals
presentation and publication of the results
interaction with team members and collaborators from University Hospital Köln as well as other institutes with the FZ Jülich and industrial partners
university degree (Diploma / Master) in veterinary medicine, neuroscience, biology or a related field
animal handling skills, preferably experience with anesthesia and surgery in rodents
laboratory animal science course according to the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science (FELASA), category B, or equivalent
good command of German or English
mobility and willingness to conduct experiments both at FZ Jülich and University Hospital Köln
a stimulating, collaborative, and international research environment
excellent working conditions
continuous scientific mentoring by your scientific advisors
doctoral degree conferred by University of Köln (Medical Faculty) or University of Bonn (Faculty of Sciences), depending on previous academic degree
usually a contract for the duration of 3 years
