1 PhD Research Fellowship Position within the area "Growth and characterization of III-nitride
nanostructure/graphene UV LEDs" (IE 033/2018)
A PhD-position is available at the Department of Electronic Systems at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Department of Electronic Systems (IES). The position will be in the "III-V semiconductor nano-device" group at IES and is funded by NTNU.
The PhD positions is for up to 4 years with 25% work assignments for NTNU/IES.
Information about the department
Currently IES has approximately 165 full-time employees spread across 45 professors/ass professors, 70 PhD, 25 research/Post.Doc and 25
engineering/administration. IES has the principal responsibility for education and research in electronics at NTNU. IES research portfolio
comprises the areas of statistical signal processing, wireless communication, marine acoustics/sub-sea communications, multimedia and speech
technology, micro- and nano-technology, sensors, and medical technology.
The "III-V semiconductor nano-device" group at IES focuses on growth, characterization and processing of hybrid III-V semiconductor
nanostructure/graphene structures for use in various optoelectronic applications including solar cells, lasers, and LEDs. The III-V
nanostructures are grown in one of the two molecular beam epitaxy systems at the department (MBE lab). Optoelectronic characterization
of individual nanostructures and devices is done using techniques such as low temperature micro-photoluminescence, photocurrent and
electroluminescence, using a dedicated Nanophotonics lab. For fabrication of the final nano-devices, the NTNU NanoLab cleanroom
facility is used (www.ntnu.no/nanolab/english).
In this PhD project, we are looking for a PhD candidate to study AlGaN nanostructure/graphene based UV LEDs for use in various medical and health
applications. The main role for the candidate will be to study the AlGaN nanostructure growth on graphene by MBE, perform detailed optical and
structural characterization measurements, as well as some device fabrication in order to investigate its potential for UV LEDs applications.
We seek a creative and enthusiastic candidate with an outstanding academic record.
The candidate should have:
A master’s degree (by 1 July 2018) or equivalent qualifications within electrical engineering, nanotechnology, materials science or physics with a
specialization within e.g., physical electronics, semiconductor materials, or materials physics.
Good English skills are required.
The successful candidate can take responsibility for progress and can work independently.
He/she has good communication skills and is able to collaborate with other scientists in the research group.
Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language should provide evidence of good written and spoken English language skills. The following tests can
be used as documentation: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
CAE/CPE: grade B or A

applicable) and certificates from both Bachelor and Master degrees.

a contract will be signed regarding the period of employment.

The position is in code 1017 Research fellow, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 500 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
