PhD Student in Urban Water Engineering -
Decentralised Resource-Efficient Sanitation

Lulea

Ref 2756-2019

BACKGROUND
The Urban Water Research Group at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering at Lulea University of Technology seeks a driven and committed PhD student with focus on resource-effective sanitation systems.
The Urban Water Research Group has a strong position in research and education within the area of urban water systems mainly regarding stormwater, wastewater and sewer systems. Being a part of the Urban Water Research Group implies working in an international and creative environment. The group consists of a number of senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about 15 doctoral candidates. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. The group's overall aim is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (stormwater, drinking water and wastewater) including collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. Our research aims at encouraging a clean environment and the efficient use of resources, while preserving public health and safety.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This PhD project is about investigating novel and sustainable wastewater treatment and reuse technologies at pilot and full scale as well as by means of systems analysis. Within the project, it is possible to specialise on one of two main topics:
1. Resource-efficient treatment and water-reuse; studying low-impact alternative treatment and reuse options for domestic wastewater in rural areas, examples including sealed willow-bed systems, forest irrigation, willow plantation and wastewater re-use in agriculture; or
2. Decentralised greywater treatment; studying the viability, benefits and drawbacks of decentralised greywater treatment in urban and rural areas and evaluating treatment facilities for greywater treatment. The project is a strategic proposition by the Urban Water Research Group at Lulea University of Technology.

DUTIES
The PhD candidate is expected to independently plan and carry out his/her studies and field work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the doctoral thesis as well as the participation in Swedish and international conferences. The PhD candidate is supported by two supervisors during the research studies. Third-cycle education also includes courses that the PhD candidate must attend.

QUALIFICATIONS
The applicant shall hold a second-cycle degree (MSc, fully completed course requirements of at least 240 ETCS of which at least 60 ETCS at an advanced level, or equivalent) in environmental/civil engineering or comparable. English language skills are required to facilitate the candidate's presentation of research outcomes at international conferences and in scientific journals. Further skills needed are the ability to work independently and take own initiatives as well as independently advance into new research areas. Experience and/or education in the field of sanitary/urban water engineering, field work and sampling, systems analysis, statistical data analysis as well as Swedish language skills are beneficial. We expect the applicant to hold or make a driving license to facilitate field work.

The applicant should be able provide contact details of two referees on request.
