The Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig (MPI CBS) is an internationally recognized research institute of the Max Planck Society and is dedicated to the study of human cognitive abilities and brain processes. The Department of Neurology offers a research position for a
Physician / Clinician Scientist
(m/f/div)
in cognitive neuroscience and cognitive neurology in close cooperation with the Clinic of Cognitive Neurology at the University of Leipzig Medical Center.
The scientific focus of the position is to be on either (i) neuromodulation with low-intensity focused ultrasound in healthy volunteers and patients and/or (ii) mechanisms of brain-heart interactions and their alterations in cardiac and neurological diseases.
To address these topics, the position involves clinical assessments, behavioural and neuroimaging studies employing cognitive tasks, (neuro)psychological questionnaires, and imaging methods such as functional and structural MRI, EEG, MEG, and fNIRS. The precise research topic will be adjusted according to interests and/or specific qualifications of the candidate. Involvement in the clinical service of the Department of Cognitive Neurology at the University of Leipzig Medical Center is possible, but no requirement for the position. The Clinic for Cognitive Neurology offers the possibility for further training in the field of neurology and the field of psychiatry (“Weiterbildungsermächtigung” for both fields).
Prerequisites are a completed medical training and permission to work as a physician in Germany (“Approbation” or the possibility to acquire it soon), proficiency in English, which is the main language of communication at the institute, and German at a B2 level (for "Approbation" C1 will be necessary) to be able to communicate with patients and perform medical examinations. We expect outstanding records in previous medical studies and/or other relevant areas to the research field. We are looking for scientifically ambitious physicians planning to pursue clinical research and willing to work in a highly cooperative and interdisciplinary team. This is an ideal position for physicians who are planning a clinical academic career.
Candidates will be part of an enthusiastic team consisting of physicians, psychologists, neuroscientists, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, embedded in a world-leading research environment with outstanding facilities, research infrastructure, and a close interaction with the University Medical Center. The MPI CBS has four 3T MRT scanners, one of them located at the University Medical Center optimised for clinical research, a Siemens Connectom MRT scanner (one of only four worldwide), a 7T MRT scanner, MEG, EEG, fNIRS, TMS, tDCS, focused ultrasound, VR labs, eye tracking, and psychophysics labs. All facilities are supported by experienced IT and physics staff. In addition to the strong cooperations within the Department of Neurology and with the Clinic of Cognitive Neurology at the University of Leipzig Medical Center, there are also strong interactions among all departments and research groups at the MPI CBS and with other institutions in Germany as well as worldwide.
Starting date is 1st November 2022 or later (to be negotiated) and the duration of the position is three years. Salary depends on experience and is based on regulations of the Max Planck Society. The Max Planck Society is committed to increase the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society strives for gender equity and welcomes applications from all backgrounds.
We are looking forward to receiving your complete
online application (reference number PHY 25/22). The application should include a cover letter and personal statement, CV, a list of publications, and contact details of two referees. Provisional closing date for applications is the 7th October 2022.
