Post doctoral position in Electrooxidation of metals and inorganics

(Ref. BAP-2016-555)

Occupation: Full-time
Period: Fixed-term contract
Place: Leuven
Apply no later than: November 13, 2016

For Surface and Interface Engineered Materials we are looking for a highly motivated researcher to work at the interface of materials science, chemical engineering and chemistry.

Post doctoral position in Electro-oxidation of metals and inorganics

Within the Faculty of Engineering Science, the Department of Materials Engineering is responsible for education, research and services in the field of materials. The research activities are related to the development of new and improved materials systems, coatings and thin films, and advanced production methods, as well as to the interaction of those materials with their environment. The starting point is physical material science (crystallographic structures, micro-structural features, phase transformations,...) and its relation to material synthesis, forming properties, functionalities and performance, with a focus on the interface between the material and its specific environment to ensure functionality. The research relies on extensive experimental equipment, modelling specialists and interdisciplinary collaboration within the university as well as with outside partners.

The position is part of the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling. CR’ is a multi-university, member-driven collaborative. Three of the world’s leading universities in materials engineering steer CR3, ensuring that it is making a difference globally.

Electrochemical oxidation is an attractive alternative means to supply oxidants in a controlled way because the chemical can be produced on demand without the necessity for large stocks of dangerous chemicals. Moreover, the reaction rate can be tuned by varying the amount of supplied electricity. This project will explore several electro-oxidation processes, with the goal to obtain a better fundamental understanding of the applicability of electro-oxidation in chemical and metallurgical unit processes.

Candidates should hold a PhD or doctoral degree in one of the following fields (or similar): Composites materials, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical engineering, ChemicalEngineering, etc.

Qualified candidates are expected to have an excellent research record as reflected by international peer-reviewed journal publications, and very good teaching and training skills, in order to contribute to the research output of the Department and to the quality of its educational program. They should possess strong organizational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.

International research experience is highly appreciated.

A strong interest for multidisciplinary research is required.

We are offering a full-time employment for 3 years at the KU Leuven within the Department of Materials Engineering, subject to requirements and deadlines set out by the supervisors.

KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. It is highly inter- and multidisciplinarily focused and strives for international excellence. In this regard, it actively works together with research partners in Belgium and abroad. It provides its students an academic education based on high-quality scientific research.
