Postdoc (f/m) Working Group Physical-biogeochemical coupling of marine systems
Job announcements
The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering
(subject to funding of the project) the following positions in the project EVAR
(Effects of variability in physical forcing on carbon and oxygen budgets)
starting on the 01/01/2019:
Postdoc (full-time) Marine Microbiology
The successful candidate will work in the group "Microbial Ecology" in collaboration with
other team members of the project EVAR. The major task will be to investigate microbial
communities which are involved in biogeochemical transformations within oxygenminimum
zones in the Benguela upwelling (Namibia). This will involve molecular
techniques, including metagenomics and metatranscriptomics analyses. In the frame of
this project two expeditions with the research vessel Meteor of several weeks, shipboard
and subsequent experimental incubation experiments at IOW are planned.
Contact: Prof. Dr. Klaus Jürgens (Biological Oceanography)
Postdoc (full-time) Geomicrobiology
The successful candidate will work in the group "Geomicrobiology" in collaboration with
other team members of the project EVAR. The major task will be to investigate the effect of
variations in oxygen concentration on the activity of sulfide oxidizing bacteria in the
sediment and in the water column and the related effects on the phosphorus cycle. In the
frame of this project two expeditions with the research vessel Meteor of several weeks
and subsequent incubation experiments at IOW are planned.
Contact: Prof. Dr. Heide Schulz-Vogt (Biological Oceanography)
Postdoc (full-time) Trace Gas Chemistry
The successful candidate will work in the working group "Trace Gas Biochemistry", and
collaborate with other team members of the project EVAR. The major task will be to
investigate the surface and water column distributions of various trace gases (CO2, CH4,
N2O) and their dependence on oxygen availability and variability as well as on
hydrodynamic forcing in the Benguela upwelling system (Namibia). He/she can rely on
established field-going and lab-based instrumentation, and broad disciplinary as well as
interdisciplinary expertise within the working group and EVAR team.
In the frame of this project two expeditions with the research vessel Meteor of several
weeks are planned.
Contact: Prof. Dr. Gregor Rehder (Marine Chemistry)
Postdoc (full-time) Physical Oceanography
The successful candidate will work in the working group "Physical-biogeochemical
coupling of marine systems" and collaborate with other team members of the project
EVAR. The major task will be to investigate the upwelling variability and its impact on
oxygen and nutrient availability as well as the analysis of hydrodynamic forcing of primary
production in the Benguela upwelling system (Namibia). He/she can rely on established
long term observations and field experiments, and broad disciplinary as well as
interdisciplinary expertise within the working group and EVAR team.
In the frame of this project two expeditions with the research vessel Meteor of several
weeks are planned.
Conatct: Dr. Volker Mohrholz (Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation)
The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in
system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with special focus on the Baltic
Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography, Marine
Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) cooperate within
the framework of a joint research program.

treated preferably in case of equal qualifications and suitability.
The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research offers a varied work in the
immediate vicinity of the Baltic Sea. Interdisciplinary research topics on the
Baltic Sea ecosystem, broad in-house expertise in physical, chemical and
biological oceanography, and marine geology, state-of-the-art-laboratory
equipment and infrastructure together with modern facilities provide an
excellent framework for best research conditions.
Application and travel costs cannot be reimbursed.
