A postdoctoral research position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Catherine Verfaillie, Stem Cell Institute, KU Leuven. The aim is to use state of the art CRISPR/Cas tools to correct mutations in relevant genes involved in eye and / or neural congenital defects, using iPSC as in vitro models and subsequently applying the technology in vivo in animal models of these diseases. The KU Leuven Stem Cell Institute, of which Dr. Verfaillie is the head, was founded in 2006 with as goals to further basic research in pluripotent and multipotent stem cell with emphasis on, basic research in de-differentiation and early differentiation of pluripotent stem cells, as well as stem cell biology in the fields of hematopoiesis, musculoskeletal, neurodegenerative and liver disorders. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with students/postdocs in the Verfaillie team highly experienced in creating differentiated progeny in the neuroectodermal lineage from iPSC, and develop CRISPR/Cas methods to correct genetic defects. The work will also be done in collaboration with teams highly versed in delivery of CRISPR/Cas tools into cells in vitro and in vivo and with expertise in animal models of these diseases.
The successful candidate should:
Hold a PhD in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry or bioengineering
Have extensive expertise in genome editing by CRISPR/Cas tools
Have outstanding publications in high impact journals
Be structured and responsible
Contribute with enthusiasm to an ambitious and highly interdisciplinary team
Be fluent in written and spoken English
We offer a position for 1 year with the possibility of renewal after a positive evaluation. Currently funding will be provided for 24 months, which can then be extended when additional funding has been secured by the fellow or by the lab on this topic.
