The Faculty of Science and Technology offers study programs at bachelor, master and doctoral level. The faculty has
established close cooperation on research with the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) and the regional
industry. A number of master's and doctoral theses are made in collaboration with the industry. The faculty has established
research collaborations with universities in the US and Europe, and has developed academic environments that are at the

Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering
The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in Chemical and Environmental Engineering
at the Faculty of Science and Technology, in the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The position is a part of the
Chemistry and Environment scientific group, within the field of Environmental Technology.
We require candidates to hold a PhD within environmental engineering or equivalent, and an acceptable track record in research
execution and communication Qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation and commercialization of research is an
advantage, but not a requirement. Independent research experience will be preferred.
A successful applicant must also be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills related to higher education, or agree to
complete university teaching courses within a period of two years from commencing the position as Associate Professor. The use
of new teaching methods is a priority at the university; hence, the appointee must also be prepared to adopt new methods.
Associate Professors will during the first year of employment, participate in "NyTi" which is the university’s
guidance and integration program for new teachers.
Instruction languages at the university are Norwegian and English. The appointee must have a good command of oral and written
Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, or acquire such language proficiency within a period of two years.
The Associate Professor position is salaried according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.510, code 1011, of NOK 535 900- 577 400
per annum. In special cases, higher salaries may apply.
The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favourable retirement

The Department is organized in four scientific groups: Mathematics, Physics, Biological Chemistry, and Chemistry and Environment.

Appointment applies to the whole university. Administratively the position is placed at the Faculty of Science and Technology in
the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The position is a part of the scientific group Chemistry and Environment, with
three Full Professors, five Associate Professors, and six Laboratory Engineers.
The scientific group Chemistry and Environment is responsible for the basic education in Chemistry and the master programme in
Environmental Engineering. We have recently moved into newly renovated offices, and our laboratories are equipped with up to
date instrumentation and infrastructure. The research focus is within green petroleum production chemistry, organic synthesis
and bioprospecting, environmental technology and aquatic environmental science. Our research is mainly experimental, but also
include theoretical approaches such as process modelling and environmental risk analysis. The group has cooperation with other
research groups at the Faculty.
The academic field of the position is Environmental Engineering. The appointee should preferably have qualifications within one or several of the following topics:
- Processes and technology for water treatment, included drinking water, waste water and industrial waters.
- Process analysis and modelling of water treatment or aquatic systems.
- Experimental methods for the study of degradation and/or separation of organic components in biological or nano-technological water treatment processes.
The position is associated with applied research and technological development. Experience from industrial projects is valuable, but not required.
The appointee must document qualifications as an independent researcher at an international level within one or more of the above-mentioned
prioritized activities. Additionally he or she must document necessary competence to teach central courses within the scientific group at
both undergraduate and graduate level, and to supervise thesis work on all levels.
The appointee shall, together with the other faculty members, conduct research and contribute to the development of research at UiS. The
appointee shall manage courses, supervise students and participate in student assessment within the field for the position and administrative duties.
We also expect our new colleague to support and participate to faculty strategies and development, and to accept responsibility for interdepartmental projects ad tasks.
The applicant must be able to document competence in pedagogical skills on the basis of completed programs in applied pedagogy at
university level or other relevant training. Documented practical experience with teaching can, in special cases, be considered
equivalent. Regulations for assessment of pedagogical competence required for employment in permanent positions (tenure) are available from the faculty.
Applicants will be screened by an expert committee on the basis of submitted material. The committee will particularly consider the
applicants’ submitted scholarly and scientific work and their pedagogical qualifications. Experience from popularization, journalism,
university politics and administration, and other relevant and documented qualifications for the position may also be considered.
