The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Engineering Science at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a
Professor of Polymer Materials (Chair)
at pay grade W3 (minimum salary per month: 6,897.36 euros) to commence on 01.10.2020. This is a permanent civil service position.
We are looking for someone with a strong engineering background who has in-depth knowledge and experience in the field of polymer materials. With regard to research, the future incumbent will have expertise and possess the relevant credentials in several of the following areas:
material development in the field of thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics and composites;
thermal analysis, rheology, plastics testing (fracture mechanics and fatigue).
The thematic focus should be on environmentally compatible polymers, lightweight construction materials, and functional polymers. Industry experience would be an asset. Managing staff and providing support for early-career scholars will be important tasks for the future postholder.
It is assumed that the professor‘s research group will raise third-party funds for its research projects to add to the appropriate basic equipment that is already available. The incumbent will be strongly encouraged to work together with existing research groups within the faculty and participation in the cross-faculty focus areas Advanced Materials and Polymer & Colloid Science, the Bavarian Polymer Institute (BPI), in addition to cooperation with non-university institutions (in particular, willingness to actively contribute to the areas of activity of Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH). Contributions to the renewal application of the Collaborative Research Centre "Microplastics" (SFB 1357) are also expected.
The incumbent will offer engineering lectures, tutorials, and internships in the field of polymer materials, which are important for bachelor‘s and master‘s degree programme (in particular Materials Science & Engineering and Polymer Science). Compulsory lectures must generally be held in German; other courses may be offered in English to facilitate international exchange.
Prerequisites for this position (in accordance with Article 7 and Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG) are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. The ability to teach in both English and German is expected. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
The University of Bayreuth seeks to increase the proportion of women involved in research and teaching (in accordance with Article 4 para 1 sentence 1 BayHSchG) and therefore particularly welcomes female applicants. All qualifications being equal, severely disabled applicants will be given priority. The University of Bayreuth strives to further increase the diversity of its academic staff. For this reason, scholars who can help make the research and teaching profile of the University more diverse are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with children are highly welcome. The University of Bayreuth is a member of the best practice club Family at University, and it offers "dual career support" for career-oriented partners of highly qualified employees. In addition, an extended audit conducted by the German Rectors‘ Conference (HRK) returned a favourable review for the University of Bayreuth‘s commitment to internationalization.
