If the general requirements under civil service law are met,
civil servant status is granted for life. The professorship is
intended to represent experimental atmospheric physics with
a focus on remote sensing in faculty 1, Physics, in research
and teaching. Applicants should be recognized for their
outstanding international performance.
The IUP is internationally well recognized for its research in
remote sensing of the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere
with quantitative methods determining natural and
anthropogenic influences on the atmosphere and climate.
The research part of the professorship should focus on
investigations of the composition of the atmosphere,
especially with regard to the distribution of trace gases, using
physical methods. This includes, in particular, satellite-based
spectroscopic remote sensing as well as the development of
new instruments and retrieval methods. We are looking for a
scientifically excellent personality who integrates the broad
expertise available in the institute into remote sensing and
enhances it innovatively. Experience in initiating and carrying
out large international research collaborations (satellite
missions, measurement campaigns, etc.) is important.
It is expected that existing international, national and local
cooperation of the IUP will be continued and expanded, e.g.
through active participation in collaborative Research
initiatives and future satellite missions.
The integration of satellite-based remote sensing in the focus
area Space Research of the Science Plan 2025 of the State
of Bremen enables broad opportunities for cooperation
within and outside the University of Bremen.
Participation in teaching in the courses in physics, Master in
Environmental Physics, and / or Master of Space Science
and Technologies, also in basic courses, is required.
Experience with media-based forms of teaching and the
willingness to consider the gender perspective in research

the development of existing and the establishment of new
The prerequisites for a position are a university degree
(degree in physics, meteorology, or related fields), a relevant
excellent PhD, as well as other outstanding scientific
achievements in the field of remote sensing of the earth‘s
atmosphere, proven by a habilitation or equivalent achievements,
that can also have been achieved outside the
university. In addition, evidence of top-class international
publications as well as the successful acquisition of
third-party funding are expected. The preferred candidate is
expected to have significant experience leading research
teams and related management skills. Pedagogical
suitability, teaching experience at a university and the ability
