The Kiel University and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel will attract more qualified women for professorships.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Kiel University, Germany and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel jointly invite applications for a

Professorship (W3) in
Marine Pelagic Ecology

We are seeking a high level scientist with outstanding qualification in Marine Ecology, especially in the context of food webs at lower trophic levels (phytoplankton and / or zooplankton). The applicant should have strong research competence in studying the interactions among plankton organisms ranging from predation, parasitism, mutualism, mixotrophy, allelopathy to competition.

An embedding of the research into ecological theory would be desirable. In order to unravel functions of species and communities the application of modern molecular tools ("omics technologies") is highly welcome.

The professorship will be based at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research (www.geomar.de) and is equipped substantially. GEOMAR has access to ship-time for expeditions to all world‘s oceans and active participation as well as use of these resources is encouraged. Through the Kiel Marine Organism Culture Center KIMOCC at GEOMAR (http://www.futureocean.org/de/kimocc/), high-level cultivation facilities are further available which will allow the combination of expedition activity with experimental work. The post will be connected to the Kiel Excellence Cluster "The Future Ocean" (http://www.ozean-der-zukunft.de/english/) and has access to the Centre for Molecular Biosciences at Kiel University (http://www.zmb.uni-kiel.de/). The successful candidate is expected to engage in the application for a third phase of the German Excellence Initiative.

The successful candidate should have a proven track-record of (i) high-level publications and third-party funding in marine ecology (ii) coordinating large scientific projects, (iii) managing and leading working groups (iv) teaching at both Bachelor and Master level. Potential research links to the Excellence Cluster would be highly favourable. Questions on the post can be addressed to Prof. Thorsten Reusch (treusch@geomar.de).

The position has been opened with respect to Art. § 61 and § 63 Section 1 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig- Holstein. The teaching commitment is 4 semester hours per week.

The Kiel University wishes to increase the number of female scientists in faculty positions and encourages applications from qualified women. Female applicants will be treated with priority if their qualifications and achievements are equal to those of male applicants. Applications from scientists with disabilities will be treated with priority in case of equal qualifications. We explicitly encourage candidates with a migration background to apply. Please refrain from submitting photographs.

Applications in English including curriculum vitae, certificates of academic degrees, a list of publications and past and present thirdparty funding, information on teaching experience, and statements on previous and future research interests should be submitted by 20 October 2016 to The Dean, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Kiel University, D-24098 Kiel, Germany.
