Researcher (tenure-track) or Senior Researcher at the DanMAX beamline at MAX IV 883841
Applications are invited for a permanent position as researcher (tenure track) or senior researcher at the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University, Denmark (www.chem.au.dk
). The intended starting date is September 1st 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University is one of the leading European chemistry departments with research programs that range from medicinal chemistry to theoretical chemistry. It has a permanent staff of 29 full and associate professors, a support-staff of ~30 people, ~150 PhD-students and postdocs, and more than 500 students. The successful candidate will additionally be affiliated with iNANO, which is among the leading nanoscience centers in Europe with strong research activities ranging from physics and chemistry to molecular biology (www.inano.au.dk
The applicant will lead the construction of the DanMAX beamline at the MAX IV synchrotron jointly with a colleague from DTU. The beamline will comprise two instruments dedicated to powder diffraction and full field imaging and is a collaborative effort between Aarhus University, DTU, University of Copenhagen and MAX IV. Aarhus University is primarily responsible for the powder diffraction station.
The applicant will be part of the vibrant materials research environment at Aarhus University. This includes the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Materials Crystallography (cmc.chem.au.dk
), a range of other large projects within synthesis and advanced characterization of functional materials, an industry portal, and a wide range of synchrotron and neutron activities such as lead construction of the Heimdal beamline at ESS.
Responsibilities and tasks
The applicant will be responsible for the design and construction of the powder diffraction branch of the beamline, as well as act as the project manager of the beamline. In the operations phase the candidate will in addition be responsible for developing and supporting educational activities within synchrotron science as well as developing a research program complementing activities at the Department of Chemistry and iNANO.
Candidates must hold a PhD degree in chemistry, crystallography, physics, materials science or a related discipline. The successful candidate must have a strong background in x-ray science, crystallography and instrumentation. A previous position at a synchrotron or neutron source and/or a background in X-ray and/or neutron diffraction is preferred. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have documented experience in project management, have shown self-motivation in scientific research, ability to work independently and to plan and carry out complicated tasks as well as good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Candidates must demonstrate potential for excellent research and industrial or public sector collaboration. Extensive postdoctoral training or similar is expected (see below for tenure-track program).
Candidates must have an excellent record of independent research accomplishments including experience in construction and operation of experimental facilities for X-ray or neutron science, in the preparation of technical reports, collaborations with industry or public organisations, scholarly achievement, an established record of external funding, as well as concomitant strong evidence of emerging leadership in their field. In addition to the above criteria, consideration will be given to scientific production and research program, as well as documented ability to design and construct advanced scientific instrumentation within the field of crystallography. Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas, the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities, the ability to promote and utilize research results, an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience, and the ability to contribute to development of the department's internal and external cooperation are all competences that are evaluated positively for this position.
Initially the place of work is split between Aarhus University, Langelandsgade 140, DK-8000 Aarhus and the MAX-IV site, Lund University, Fotongatan 2, 225 92 S-Lund. From the end of 2017 the work will predominantly take place in Lund. The area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments, but a dual association to Aarhus University and MAX IV will be in place. The position is not time limited but a transition to become head of beamline in the operation phase is subject to an interview and evaluation by the DanMAX steering committee.
