In the FWF project “The function of aesthetics in our everyday lifes” (P35140), PI Dr. Eva Specker, co-PI Dr. Helmut Leder, we are interested in assessing the role and function of aesthetics in our everyday life. From the lab, we know that beauty can capture and guide our attention, we now want to see how these processes function in our everyday life. Specifically, we will focus on an (everyday) urban environment as well as a museum context which can be seen as a typical environment to experience beauty in. In addition, we will have participants report on their daily experiences with beauty using experience sampling methods in order to see how beauty can influence us during our every-day life.
You would be an excellent fit if you (1) have a strong interested in empirical aesthetics, (2) are motivated to pursue an academic career, (3) have programming skills (e.g. R or Python), (4) either have experience in working with (mobile) eye-tracking (outside of the lab) and/or experience sampling/daily diary studies or are willing to learn, (5) are able to come up with creative original ideas, and (6) are able to work independently and collaborate well with others. We offer a stimulating research environment within the EVA-lab specifically—existing of a mix of PhD students as well as post-docs at varying stages of their career—and the Faculty of Psychology generally. We are an internationally oriented lab with an intact social climate and a combined wealth of experience. In addition, we offer well-equipped labs (e.g., (mobile) eye-tracking, FNIRS, EEG, facial EMG, TMS, fMRI (in the department) as well as variety of options for behavior methods.

Job Description:
In a new FWF project “The function of aesthetics in our everyday lifes” (P35140), PI Dr. Eva Specker, co-PI Dr. Helmut Leder, we offer two 3-year PhD (prae doc) positions at the EVA-LABs located at University of Vienna, Faculty of Psychology. The successful candidate(s) will be pursuing a Ph.D. based on field and laboratory experiments. These experiments will involve a wide range of methodologies. Eye-tracking and other physiological measurements will be combined with questionnaires. The successful candidate will work closely with the PIs and the other PhD student in the project.
Profile:
Profile: - MSc or MA/Diploma in the field Psychology/Cognitive Science/Neuroscience with interest in empirical aesthetics - Research experience with experimental methods (and eventually field studies) -
Programming skills (e.g., R, Python) – Skilled in statistical data analysis - Excellent command of and expressiveness in written and spoken English - Pronounced ability to work in a team - Strong interest in (interdisciplinary) collaboration - Willingness to learn new methods – Ability to work independently
Desirable qualifications are - Experience with (mobile)eye-tracking and/or psychophysiological methods (e.g., EEG, facial EMG) and/or experience sampling/daily diary studies is advantageous.
