Scientific Staff (prae doc)
at the Department of Musicology (Historical Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Systematic Musicology)
to 28.02.2026.

Reference number: 13745

The Institute of Musicology at the University of Vienna ranks among the largest musicological institutes in the German-speaking world. We offer a productive research climate and a stimulating working atmosphere, with excellent possibilities for continuing education.

The position advertised here is linked to the international WEAVE-Project 'E-LAUTE (Electronic Linked, Annotated and Unified Tablature Editions): The Lute in the German-Speaking Area 1450–1550' (FWF Lead Agency). The successful candidate will be prepared to begin a PhD degree at the University of Vienna's Institute of Musicology, with a dissertation topic involved in the E-LAUTE project. The candidate will work in an international team of 24 researchers, but primarily alongside the project leader at the University of Vienna's Institute of Musicology, together with two student assistants.

E-LAUTE aims to create an open-access comprehensive and interactive edition of the lute tablatures of the German-speaking area between 1450 and 1550. The corpus (2,000 pages) has not yet been investigated as a whole and is barely accessible to scholars and professional musicians as well as to the broad public, has not been deciphered and has therefore been evaluated only selectively. The project has two closely related parts: the edition itself and pilot studies in the fields of musicology, music informatics, German studies, and performance practice. These two parts will be worked on in parallel. As a result, we will create a novel form of music edition: an 'open knowledge platform' in which the research fields intertwine and transform the ‘classic’ edition into a space of interdisciplinary and discipline-specific work. The focus of the vacant position is the pilot study V: the first Hybrid Edition of the Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich (DTÖ); and partly also pilot study IV: Dialogues About Music (‘interactive annotations’) based on the material from this Hybrid Edition. Relating to these pilot studies, the following main field can be optionally chosen for the dissertation a) modern editorial practices and knowledge transfer, communication strategies in the editing of the music before 1600; b) modern reception and interpretation of the music before 1600.

The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 3 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Duration of employment: 3 year/s

Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
