The research group of Irma Querques at the Max Perutz Labs is recruiting a PhD student at the Department of Structural and Computational Biology at the University of Vienna, Austria. The Max Perutz Labs are a joint venture of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. Located at the Campus Vienna Biocenter the Max Perutz Labs are home to over 450 scientists from over 30 nations organized in more than 50 groups working in the field of molecular biology.
The employment contract is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer declares non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
The candidate will work on the project: Structural and mechanistic studies of bacterial transposons. The ideal candidate should have experience in the production of recombinant proteins and the purification of proteins using chromatographic techniques. Basic knowledge in the biophysical characterization of proteins and in protein crystallisation and cryo-electron microscopy analysis is highly desired. Participation in research, teaching and administration: - Participation in research projects / research studies - Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations - We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months. - Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement - Supervision of students - Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums - Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
Profile:
The ideal candidate should have a Master degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology and/or related areas. Knowledge of production and purification of protein, modelling and display of protein structure - High ability to express him*herself both orally and in writing - Excellent command of written and spoken English - IT user skills - Ability to work in a team You need to have successfully passed the MFPL-PhD selection. You will work with bacterial cells for protein production and functional characterization - Structural analysis and modelling of protein complexes - Knowledge of university processes and structures - Experience abroad - Basic experience in research methods and academic writing would be an advantage
