The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.
With a starting date as soon as possible, the Quantum Technology Competence Center (QTZ) is looking for a candidate to fill the following position at PTB's Braunschweig site:
scientist with a doctorate (PhD) for the development of the Ion Trap Development and Manufacturing user platform
up to Remuneration Group 14 TVöD Bund/A14 BBesO
full-time (39 hours/week) – permanent contract
Your tasks:
PTB conducts high-level research in essential fields of quantum technologies (QT). PTB's Quantum Technology Competence Center (QTZ), which is currently being established, supports the targeted transfer of quantum technologies (QT) to applications that have economic potential. The QTZ acts as a central contact for industry at the interface between scientific research and application-related development. Furthermore, it is intended to help German industry take optimal advantage of the outstanding metrological and expert competence of PTB. PTB's sites in Berlin and Braunschweig are creating user platforms that serve as homes for the exchange of information and cooperation with industry.
You make your own research contributions and act as a link between the QTZ and external partners from industry as well as colleagues within PTB. Together with the QTZ team, you will leverage synergies beyond the limits of individual user platforms.
Your tasks will focus on the following aspects:
- Developing the QTZ user platform in your role as the scientist in charge and contact person for industry
- Doing autonomous research, integrated into PTB's activities, in particular in the activities of the QUEST Institute
- Developing and designing processes for the manufacturing of micro ion traps with lithographic methods, coating technology, laser processing of materials, wet and dry etching procedures as well as other technologies in cooperation with external partners and scientific users
- Designing and developing procedures for assembling prototype components from individual substrates
– in this context, also developing and implementing joining processes
- Assuming staff responsibility for the ion trap manufacturing and characterization
- Coordinating the use and operation of cleanroom facilities
- Strategically enhancing the capabilities for manufacturing prototype ion traps
- Presenting and publishing the scientific results
- Raising third-party funds and ensuring the technical mentoring of doctoral candidates
- Cooperating with external partners in developing and characterizing as well as independently qualifying ion traps
- Developing service offers such as calibration services in cooperation with external partners
- Supporting standardization activities as well as knowledge transfer offers for partners from industry
Your profile:
- You have completed your university studies (German Diplom or Master's) in nanotechnologies, mechanical engineering, physics or a comparable area and have obtained a doctorate in physics or a comparable subject in the field of microstructured ion traps.
- You have the capacity to take on leadership or management tasks at a later point in time, which must be verified in an assessment center.
- You have relevant experiences with the microfabrication of ion traps, and you have demonstrated your own development achievements.
- You have specialist knowledge in the applications fields of quantum computing/simulations and metrology.
- You are a team player with excellent communication skills.
- You are able to perform scientific work autonomously.
- You are highly committed, well-organized and willing to continuously improve your skills.
- You have a very good command of both spoken and written German and English.
- You are willing to travel within Germany and abroad within the scope of your assignment.
- You are fit to work in a cleanroom as well as in a low-temperature laboratory.
