at the Department of Astrophysics

You will have the opportunity to work within a dedicated team on forefront science while profiting from the international environment in the Department of Astrophysics within the lively city of Vienna. The department is involved in the development of international astronomical instrumentation projects, both at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the European Space Agency (ESA). We are looking for an outstanding candidate for a full-time position to strengthen our instrumentation group. Initially, this post is to be filled for 4 years. Afterwards, there is a possibility to extend the post to a permanent contract.

Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Active participation in science, education, and management.
This involves:
i) Coordination and implementation of astronomical projects connected with ESO, in particular, but not exclusively, instrumentation projects for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Individual tasks include software development, (co-)organisation of and participation in international consortium and collaboration meetings, project administration and correspondence with funding agencies, and contributions to preparatory studies;
ii) Project management, (co-)supervision and (co-)organisation within the department's "laboratory for astronomical instrumentation" which comprises, apart from ESO and ESA related projects, also the university-owned Leopold Figl Observatory and a local student telescope for education.
Further tasks include:
iii) Conducting independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement; iv) (Co-)supervision of students; v) Contributions to general organisational and administrative tasks.
Profile:
- PhD or doctoral degree in Astronomy/Astrophysics
- Experience in astronomical software development
- Familiar with at least one major programming language
- Ability to work in a team
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience in teaching and training
- Experience in (co-)supervising students
- Experience in (co-)organising events
