The Center for Molecular Biology (ZMB) was founded in 2007, centralizing all groups of the University of Vienna working in the field of molecular biology. To promote collaborations with the life sciences departments of the Medical University of Vienna, the Max Perutz Labs were founded in 2005. Job Description:
The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in research and teaching in the area of gene expression, including RNA biogenesis, processing and turnover as well as modelling and simulation of dynamic biological systems. The tasks involve the conceptual design, programming, execution and distribution of computational pipelines for the analysis and interpretation of state-of-the-art high-throughput RNA/DNA sequencing datasets, including professional reporting. It includes bioinformatic administration and infrastructure maintenance. The candidate is expected to have advanced communication skills that allows her*him to actively engage in collaborative research in the context of multiple ongoing research projects within the group, and bioinformatic coordination of collaborative projects with other groups on campus and beyond. The candidate will also be involved in teaching the theoretical and practical background of high-throughput RNA/DNA sequencing technologies and underlying protocols at the Master and PhD level (including experimental design, analysis tools, data interpretation and statistical evaluation). We offer a fixed-term position (40 hours/week) for 4 years with the possibility of extension to a permanent contract based on qualification agreement. Working part-time is in principle possible. The preferred starting date is May 2021.
Profile:
• PhD degree in bioinformatics, computer science or a related field
• Good understanding of the mechanisms in gene expression from an RNA-centric perspective (including RNA transcription, processing and turnover, as well as translation and related biological processes)
• Strong experience in NGS analyses including short and long read RNA- and DNA-sequencing technologiesStrong background in scientific software development, preferably in python, R and Java.
• Experience in kinetic modelling and simulation
• Strong mathematics / biostatistics background
• Excellent publication record
• High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
• Experience with specialized assays (SLAM-seq, TT-seq, small RNA seq) is beneficial
• Prior teaching experience is beneficial
