A permanent, half-time (20 hours/week) Senior Scientist position is available in the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research (research group Structural and Functional Botany).
Extent of Employment: 20.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Supported by a technical assistant, the successful candidate will be responsible for the operation, coordination, and maintenance of the department's Computer Tomography lab, which is currently equipped with two tomography systems (a Zeiss MicroXCT-200 and a Bruker SkyScan 1275). Main tasks will include technical management of the lab, problem solving, and communication with other researchers and off-site technical support. While the successful candidate will be involved in ongoing research, he or she will also have the possibility to develop own research projects. In addition, he/she is expected to engage in our research group's seminars and meetings, and to contribute to teaching activities (BSc and MSc curricula). - The Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research houses various research groups with botanical, zoological, evolutionary, and ecological foci. The Department offers a stimulating working environment and excellent research facilities including state-of-the-art laboratories for morphological as well as for molecular work. Research in Structural and Functional Botany is mainly concerned with floral structure and evolution as well as with palynology, both with extant and fossil plants.
Profile:
A PhD degree in biology - Research experience in botany documented with a record of internationally recognized publications (preferred research interests include floral structure and evolution). - Previous experience with micro-computer tomography used on plant samples.
- Previous experience with software packages such as AMIRA or similar used for the analyses and visualization of 3D-data.
- A flair for technical matters and the readiness to acquaint oneself with new methods and techniques.
- Readiness to take part in training courses on radiation protection.
- Excellent communication skills in English (both oral and written).
Previous experience with sample preparation of delicate plant samples such as flowers is of advantage.
- Previous experience with geometric morphometric and/or multivariate statistical analyses using R is of advantage.
