The Department of Environmental Geosciences is an international and dynamic team of approximately 20 scientists that conducts research and provides education in environmental science with a focus on environmental analytics of aquatic and terrestrial systems. Among other topics, we study the environmental fate of organic and inorganic pollutants. As a Senior Scientist, you lead the management of our inorganic analytics laboratory and contribute to research and education at the department. With your open-minded, flexible, and reliable personality, you sustain laboratory operations and analytical quality in our department.
This position (40 hours/week) is currently limited to 6 months with the possibility of subsequent unlimited employment, we are seeking a long-term engagement in our department, to start at the earliest possible date. Salary level according to collective agreement: §54 VwGr. B1 lit.b (postdoc). The actual salary may be higher, based on your expertise and experience according to the guidelines of the University of Vienna.

Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
- Lead and coordinate the management and organization of our research laboratory; responsibility for analytical instruments and laboratory infrastructure, service and maintain instruments, manage and control hazardous substances and poisons.
- Develop and improve analytical methods in environmental inorganic trace analytical chemistry; conduct experiments/analyses and perform data analysis.
- Teach BSc- and MSc-level classes in the area of environmental sciences as defined by the collective agreement.
- Identify the demand and give advice for the selection of new instruments; conduct purchases and act as our contact point to instrument manufacturers.
- Guide and advice students and researchers from undergraduate to post-doctoral level concerning laboratory operations and safety.
Profile:
You hold a PhD in a field relevant to environmental analytical chemistry and have proven expertise in the analysis of inorganic chemicals (trace metals) at trace levels/environmental concentrations by means of ICP-OES, ICP-MS and AAS including suitable data analysis software. Expertise with additional analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS/MS, elemental analysis, spectroscopy, headspace gas analysis) and with sample preparation techniques (e.g. extraction, enrichment, digestion) is desired. You have experience in operating and maintaining complex experimental setups and instrumentation. Fundamental experience in chromatography (IC, GC- or LC-MS) is beneficial, as well as knowledge in IT administration (e.g. server based data management, maintenance of IT infrastructure) and website administration.
Candidates with several years of experience in laboratory management and team leadership would be preferred, as well as additional trainings to manage a laboratory (e.g., poisons (“Gift-Bezugsberechtigung”), first responder training, fire warden, etc.).
You are curious, well organized, reliable, inspiring, and able to take decisions under time pressure.
You are communicative and want to become a part of a motivated, international, and diverse team of researchers.
You have experience in teaching in the field of analytical, inorganic chemistry and/or geochemistry, especially in practical laboratory courses and enjoy knowledge transfer to students, PhDs and post-docs.
