We offer a university senior scientist position for an atmospheric transport model developer. The position will be embedded in the new research group of Prof. Andreas Stohl on atmospheric transport modelling.
The starting date can be as early as 1 March 2020. The position is initially limited to an employment duration of 3 years with a transition to a permanent position possible through mutual agreement from both sides.
The Department of Meteorology and Geophysics has recently filled two professorship positions (Andreas Stohl and Martin Weissmann, both starting in the beginning of 2020) and is currently in the process of filling a third professorship. This will create an exciting international working environment for many new scientists, large potential for collaboration, and the opportunity for strong personal development.
We seek an outstanding candidate to work in the new research group of A. Stohl. The group will further develop the Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART (see www.flexpart.eu) and use it as its main working tool for a large range of applications, such as atmospheric energy and moisture transport, pollution transport, or inverse modelling of greenhouse gases. The senior scientist shall be the future focal point of FLEXPART development, including code development, code review, release of new FLEXPART versions and scientific publications describing the model. The senior scientist shall also develop his/her own research using the FLEXPART model, and shall contribute to the research of others in the group.
Candidates are requested to propose a research agenda based on FLEXPART. Candidates are also invited to sketch their ideas for future FLEXPART development, which can include the long-term possibility of re-coding large parts of the model.
Besides research, the successful candidate is also expected to participate in teaching and the supervision of students. Financial support is available for attending international meetings and visiting international research partners.
Participation in research, teaching and administration:
• Maintenance and development of the FLEXPART Lagrangian particle dispersion model;
• Research that complements the activities of the group;
• Contributions to project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding;
• Scientific publications and presentations;
• Scientific and technical support of group members;
• Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement;
• Supervision of students;
• Full involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration.
• Doctoral / PhD degree in meteorology, physics or related subject;
• Good communication skills and ability to work in a team;
• Profound experience in programming, ideally with Fortran;
• Profound experience in numerical modelling;
• Proven ability to publish in highly ranked international journals;
• Excellent command of written and spoken English.
Furthermore, the following skills/expertise will be an asset:
• Experience with developing and/or using FLEXPART or another Lagrangian atmospheric transport model;
• Experience in external fundraising;
• Experience in teaching.
