The Division of Microbial Ecology (DoME) at the Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is a creative and ambitious team that conducts internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology.
We are searching for a Senior Scientist with outstanding expertise in the field of microbiology, genomics, and microbial symbioses to support the division in our research on microbe-host interaction in protists as model systems.
Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
The candidate will contribute to the research goals of the DoME as a Senior Scientist with particular emphasis on microbial eukaryotes and their intracellular symbionts, their biology, ecology, and evolution. The candidate will also assist in building and maintaining respective research infrastructure and contribute to technology development at the DoME.
Involvement in the acquisition of third-party funding is expected. The position includes some administration and teaching as regulated by the collective agreement.
Profile:
Successful candidates should have a doctoral degree in microbiology and at least 5 years of relevant post-doctoral research experience related to microbial symbioses research.
Ideally, the candidate has a thorough knowledge of microbial symbionts in heterotrophic protists. The job requires advanced level experience in diverse microbial ecology techniques such as single-cell methods (fluorescence in situ hybridization, fluorescence-activated cell sorting), microbial genomics, metabolic pathway analysis, phylogenetic analysis, and experience in the isolation, cultivation, and characterization of heterotrophic protists (ideally amoeba) and their bacterial symbionts. Expertise with cell culture techniques is highly desirable.
Demonstrated aptitude for scientific writing and a track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals is expected.
Very good communication skills in English (written and spoken) are mandatory and communication skills in German are preferred. The ability to work in a team is essential.
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have experience in supervising students at the Bachelor or Master level.
