The Hertie School of Governance seeks to fill the position of a
Student Assistant (m/f)
16 hours/ week
The contract duration is 1 year, starting on 1 July 2018.
The position will be affiliated with and funded by a DFG research project (project lead: Dr. Clara Weinhardt) on the impact of rising powers on pro-Southern norms of differentiation in world politics, with a focus on international trade politics. The guiding question of the project is whether the strength of rising powers adds to the power of Southern coalitions behind norms of differentiation or whether, instead, the graduation of rising powers from developing country status weakens pro-Southern norms. In close collaboration with a research team based at the University of St. Gallen (project lead: Professor Klaus Dingwerth), we plan to examine the evolution of differentiation norms in the fields of international climate politics (Common But Differentiated Responsibilities norm), international trade politics (Special and Differential Treatment norm) and possibly one additional issue area of international affairs. We expect the project to start on 01 July 2018, pending the release of funds.
• Several contributions to the DFG research project “The Rise of Emerging Powers: A Challenge to Norms of Differential Treatment for Developing Countries?”
• Assistance in the compilation and analysis of data on differentiation norms in world trade politics; possibly assistance in the compilation and analysis of data on differentiation norms in the climate regime and one other issue area of international affairs
• Literature review on project-relevant topics
• Some editing tasks
• Assistance in project management, including the organization of project Workshops
• Graduate student holding a Bachelor’s degree or Bachelor student (Bachelor’s degree obtained at latest by September/October 2018)
• Enrollment for at least the contract period
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
• Good knowledge of International Relations, ideally in the areas of international norms, international trade politics, rising powers and/or North-South relations
• Ability and willingness to work in a team

• Active participation in a research project in the field of global trade governance within the scope of the DFG research project “The Rise of Emerging Powers: A Challenge to Norms of Differential Treatment for Developing Countries?”
