University Assistant (post doc)
at the Department of Astrophysics

Reference number: 13118

The Department of Astrophysics of the University of Vienna invites applications for a postdoctoral position in observational extragalactic astrophysics. We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified astronomer able to conduct independent research and to attract further team members within the extragalactic chair "Galaxy Formation in the Early Universe" of Professor Bodo Ziegler. Our group conducts programs (using ESO/VLT and HST) to quantitatively study distant galaxies, in particular with MOS and IFU spectroscopy, and to investigate x-ray detected groups and clusters and their members (galaxy kinematics, stellar populations, star formation, AGN activity). We are a member of the ELT/MOSAIC and Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope instrument consortia so that participation in the respective Science Working Groups is expected, too. We offer a vibrant and enthusiastic environment in a large department with numerous staff members working in various areas of astrophysics from stars and planets to cosmology and both with observational and theoretical studies enabling many stimulating discussions. Austria being a member of ESO and ESA has access to all their first-class facilities. We offer a comfortable working atmosphere in a historical building but with newly renovated and refurbished offices. The city of Vienna has a long tradition of leading world-wide rankings for its high living quality. Adequate salaries are paid and funding for travel is available.
