The Department of Astrophysics of the University of Vienna invites applications for a postdoctoral position in observational extragalactic astrophysics. We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified astronomer able to conduct independent research and to attract further team members within the extragalactic chair "Galaxy Formation in the Early Universe" of Professor Bodo Ziegler. Our group conducts programs (using ESO/VLT and HST) to quantitatively study distant galaxies, in particular with MOS and IFU spectroscopy, and to investigate x-ray detected groups and clusters and their members (galaxy kinematics, stellar populations, star formation, AGN activity). We are a member of the ELT/MOSAIC and Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope instrument consortia so that participation in the respective Science Working Groups is expected, too. We offer a vibrant and enthusiastic environment in a large department with numerous staff members working in various areas of astrophysics from stars and planets to cosmology and both with observational and theoretical studies enabling many stimulating discussions. Austria being a member of ESO and ESA has access to all their first-class facilities. We offer a comfortable working atmosphere in a historical building but with newly renovated and refurbished offices. Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

The selected researcher is expected to conduct frontier research with advanced knowledge for reducing and analyzing datasets, to write papers, to present results at international conferences, to actively propose observations with ground-based and/or satellite facilities, to take part in raising third-party fundings and to actively participate in department life. Furthermore, independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement, and the supervision of students are required.

Profile:

Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field.
We expect excellence in optical/nearinfrared astronomy with strong expertise in multi-object and 3D/IFU spectroscopy and very good experience with galaxy kinematics and morphologies.
Basic knowledge in astronomical software is a must, just as an excellent command of written and spoken English.

In addition, the ability to work in teams, high oral and written expressiveness as well as didactic qualifications are required.
