Job Description:
The Polz lab is looking for a postdoc to study microbial growth at the single cell level. Microbes drive many global cycles and exert profound influence on the wellbeing of other organisms. Yet many seemingly simple parameters of microbial life remain poorly understood, including how biomass is distributed among different microbial groups and how they grow in the wild. The goal of this work is to address fundamental questions of how cellular mass and growth rate are related in diverse organisms under environmentally relevant conditions such as different types of limitations and nutrient fluctuations. Central to this work is the suspended microchannel resonator (SMR), which is a novel technology that allows the precise measurement of cellular mass at the single cell level and allows linking this parameter to other metabolic and physiological parameters. The candidate is expected to drive the research project but also to actively participate in teaching and administration. This includes involvement in research projects/research studies, international publications, and presentations at seminars, workshops and conferences. The supervision of students and teaching as regulated by the collective agreement is expected. We invite applicants to submit their curriculum vitae, letter of intent, and diplomas.
Profile:
Successful candidates should have a doctoral degree in any field of biology, and should possess considerable mathematical abilities as well as laboratory experience in microbiology with at least some experience in microbial growth. A publication record in international peer-reviewed journals documenting these skills is expected. Good communication skills in English (written and spoken) are mandatory. The ability to work in a team is essential.
