We offer a PraeDoc/PhD research position on Unveiling merged satellite galaxies from integrated-light spectroscopy in the group of Prof. Glenn van de Ven in the Department of Astrophysics. The starting date can be as early as 1 March 2020 and the duration is for 4 years.
We seek an outstanding Prae-Doctoral/PhD candidate to work in our research team in which we develop and apply novel population-dynamical models to nearby galaxies to uncover their luminous and dark matter distribution as well as to unravel their formation history.
Driven by gravity, galaxies continuously grow through accretion of smaller systems. Stellar streams are nice illustrations of this hierarchical build-up, but they only reflect the most recent events as the stars quickly disperse. Still, the birth place of stars are imprinted in their chemical properties with in-situ born stars typically more enriched than same-age accreted stars from satellite galaxies. In turn, these varying chemical properties are encoded in the integrated-light spectroscopic observations of nearby galaxies. The focus of the doctoral thesis will be to exploit this population memory to infer the contribution of accreted stars and subsequently unveil the now-merged satellite galaxies in which they were born.
You will have the opportunity to work within a dedicated team on forefront science, while profiting from the international environment in the Department of Astrophysics within the lively city of Vienna. Our team has privileged access to the Vienna Scientific Cluster super-computing facility. You have access to ESO's world-leading observing facilities and opportunities to get involved with instrument projects. You participate in teaching and supervision of students. Generous financial support is available to attend international meetings as well as to invite science collaborators.

MSc degree in astronomy / astrophysics;
Excellent command of written and spoken English;
Excellent communication skills;

Ability to work in a team
The position will involve the application and extension of computational-intensive stellar population numerical codes to state-of-the-art integral-field spectroscopic observations. Therefore, it is an asset if the successful candidate has: Experience in stellar population modelling; Experience in stellar spectroscopy.
