The research group of Prof. Tecumseh Fitch at the Department of Behavioral and Cognitive Biology has funding available for a four-year PhD position in Cognitive Biology. The lab is interested in animal cognition and communication, including such topics as the comparative analysis of the evolution of speech, language and music. Members conduct behavioral experiments with a diverse group of species, including birds (ravens, parrots) and mammals (deer, dogs and primates including humans), and research in both cognition and acoustic communication. For the current position a strong background in animal cognition, animal bioacoustics, cognitive neuroscience, speech science, and/or signal processing is desirable.
The 4-year PhD position is fully paid (30 hours/week) and is based at the Department of Behavioral and Cognitive Biology at the University of Vienna, Austria (http://cogbio.univie.ac.at/). The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof. Tecumseh Fitch and will join a large cohort of about 15 PhD students in the doctoral college “Cognition and Communication”.
The PhD candidate will be embedded in the Vienna Doctoral School for Cognition, Behavior and Neuroscience (VDS CoBeNe) at the University of Vienna (https://vds-cobene.univie.ac.at). The main goal of VDS CoBeNe is quality assurance in PhD training and education. In addition, the organization stands for promotion of inter- and transdisciplinary knowledge exchange.
Participation in research, teaching and administration: - Participation in research projects / research studies - Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations - Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement - Supervision of students - Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums - Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
• A Masters degree or equivalent in Biology, Psychology or a related field (including speech science, or biophysics)
• Excellent knowledge of English
• Strong quantitative and computer skills
• Research experience in animal behavior and/or Knowledge of acoustic communication
• Dedication to scientific research, independence, and good team skills
Beneficial (but not required) qualifications:
• Experience of designing and conducting behavioral experiments
• Good understanding of evolutionary biology, and the comparative method
• Computer programming (Python, Matlab, Julia, C++, etc.)
• Lab and/or field experience
