About the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy
The
Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP) gathers together the research strengths of the University of Vienna's Department of Philosophy, to create an international hub for doctoral research in academic philosophy. The VDP supports research in theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy, and the history of philosophy. It is committed to diversity in its membership and promotes a plurality of different philosophical traditions, methods, and forms of thought.
The VDP fosters cross-fertilization between research projects in different fields and in different traditions, and it gives its doctoral researchers a competitive edge by providing them with broad areas of competence as well as in-depth specialization. The VDPs ambitious profile builds on the unusually high number of internationally leading faculty members, coming from a wide variety of philosophical domains and schools of philosophical research.

Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
The successful candidates will pursue independent doctoral research in one or more subfields of philosophy. They will work under the supervision of at least one member of the
VDP supervisory faculty, and in accordance with the VDP
code of good practice. They will be expected to participate in a range of research, teaching, and organizational activities.
In summary, the main responsibilities are:
- Presenting the doctoral project proposal in an open forum within the first 12 months.
- Signing a doctoral thesis agreement within the first 12-18 months, which sets out the trajectory to successful completion of the research.
- Participating in doctoral colloquia for a minimum of 24 ECTS credits.
- Delivering undergraduate teaching from the second year onwards, as defined by the collective bargaining agreement: §49(9) teaching limits for B1 staff.
- Writing a doctoral thesis in philosophy.
- Participating actively in research activities.
- Contributing to the organization of VDP events, such as seminars, workshops, conferences, and summer schools.
Duration of employment: Employment is initially limited to 1.5 years but is automatically extended to a total of 3 years, unless the employer submits a non-extension declaration within the first 12 months.
Salary: Gross monthly salary of ~EUR 2228. (75% position at
salary group B1).
Profile:
Applicants should have:
- A Masters degree in the intended field of research.
- An excellent command of English and/ or German.
- The ability to carry out independent research and to work in a team.
