The Research Platform “Secondary metabolomes of bacterial communities”, an interdisciplinary research cooperation of the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science and the Faculty of Chemistry, is looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic PhD student in the field of microbiology. The Research Platform will pursue an innovative approach to creating defined, fully tractable microbial communities that produce novel secondary metabolites with potential to be developed into drugs. We are an international, committed team and offer an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories, and a creative and stimulating working atmosphere.
Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This includes:
+ Involvement in research projects
+ Involvement in scientific reports
+ Publications, and presentations at meetings and conferences
+ Involvement in project applications for third-party funding
+ Teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
+ Supervision of trainees and students
Minimum requirement profile
+ Diploma or master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, or equivalent qualification
+ Excellent command of written and spoken English
+ High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
+ Excellent team-working ability
+ Excellent knowledge of microbiology, molecular biology and microbial ecology required
+ Profound knowledge of environmental and host-associated microbiome science desirable
Methodological competences (one or more of the following):
+ Knowledge of experimental methods in molecular microbial ecology
+ Hands-on experience with analyses of environmental and animal microbiomes is considered an advantage
+ Hands-on experience with cultivation and isolation of microorganisms is considered an advantage
+ Hands-on experience with methods for cultivation-independent analysis of microbes, including DNA- and RNA-based sequence analyses (e.g. amplicon sequencing, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics), fluorescence in situ hybridization and (RT-)qPCR desirable
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have excellent communication and organizational skills.
