The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts independent research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). In the department The Pesticide Safety Division of the BfR has an immediate vacancy for the following permanent position in the “Testing and Assessment Strategies for Pesticides” specialist group:

The task of the unit includes the health risk assessment of plant protection products and the active substances contained in them in the authorisation and licensing procedures as well as in the procedures for setting maximum residue levels in accordance with the legal requirements of Regulations (EC) No. 1107/2009 and (EC) No. 396/2005. The core tasks of the unit include the coordination of internal BfR work flows and plausibility checks of assessment results for the toxicological assessment of active substances and plant protection products, for exposure assessment and the assessment of residue behaviour and health risk assessment for consumers, for the assessment of application safety for consumers, workers, bystanders, and residents, and for the testing and assessment of methods for the analytical determination of residues. The unit also coordinates interdepartmental cooperation across procedures. The individual tasks include:
- Independent compilation of information and of partial scientific reports on health risk assessment in the legally assigned tasks in the authorisation and licensing procedures of the department
- Collaboration in and further development of knowledge management in the department
- Scientific cooperation in the optimisation, prioritisation, and further development of procedural processes and quality assurance in the control of legally assigned tasks in the approval and licensing procedures of the department
- Independent elaboration and preparation of reports and analyses on the scientific cross-sectional tasks of the department
- Answering of questions from the press and citizens
- Conceptual and scientific collaboration in the further development and establishment of overarching evaluation procedures to increase effectiveness in the department
- degree Completed university studies (Master’s degree, diploma, or comparable university degree) in food chemistry, chemistry, human or veterinary medicine, biology or another natural science or agricultural science discipline; doctorate desirable
- Career experience in the domain of scientific and administrative authorisation and approval procedures on national and EU level is desirable
- Good knowledge of relevant laws and EU regulations in the domain of pesticides (plant protection products and biocides)
- Ability to carry out independent scientific work
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Experience working abroad is advantageous
- Responsible, reliable, and committed completion of tasks
- Excellent knowledge of spoken and written German and English is required
- Good IT skills as well as a conscientious approach to work, flexibility, capacity for teamwork, resilience and willingness to travel on business are also required
