Your personal sphere of play:

The Ahrends laboratory (https://lipidomics.at/) is located in the heart of Vienna at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Vienna. Besides scientific activities in developing new and improved computational and measuring methods, research is undertaken in biomedical and preclinical research fields, generating innovative bioanalytical tools for tomorrow today. We invite applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f/d) in analytical chemistry. The lab seeks a talented and highly motivated analytical scientist to pursue scientific work in lipidomics. The primary focus is shotgun lipidomics in cardiovascular systems. A successful candidate will work with interdisciplinary teams (clinical, biostatistics, analytical, and bioinformatics scientists) and will streamline data analysis and integration across various domains. Regular publication of scientific and methodological results is strongly encouraged. Finally, the successful candidate will be able to effectively present complex results in a clear and concise manner that is accessible to a diverse audience of quantitative, experimental, and clinical scientists. The position is initially limited to one year with the option of subsquent permanent employment.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You develop and strength the independent research profile.
  • You are involved in research projects/research studies.
  • You publish international and give presentations.
  • You are responsible for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding.
  • You prepare/write a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis.
  • You hold courses independently as defined by the collective agreement.
  • You supervise of students at all studying levels.
  • You participate in evaluation measures and quality assurance.
  • You are involved in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed doctoral/PhD studies in chemistry, with a strong publication record.
  • More than 5 years experience in shotgun lipidomics and LC-MS/MS based lipidomics/metabolomics.
  • Very good knowledge of lipid structures, lipid ionization behavior and MS/MS fragmentation rules.
  • A solid understanding of the relevant concepts in mass spectrometry-based lipidomics and/or metabolomics.
  • Broad experience in instrument maintenance and troubleshooting for both low and high resolution MS.
  • Enthusiasm for learning more.
  • Broad experience in lipidomics/multi-omics extraction techniques for various sample types.
  • An understanding of the statistical principles behind current best practices in the field.
  • Strong experience using programming languages such as R and Python for data analysis and data visualization.
  • Strong communication, data presentation, and visualization skills. Therefore, English is required, and German is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and handle several concurrent, fast-paced projects.
  • Research competence and initiative proven through international publications (in renowned, subject-relevant media, peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards).
  • Experience working on research projects.
  • Didactic skills / teaching experience in e-learning.
  • Excellent knowledge of English (C1) / other foreign language.
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures is a significant advantage.
  • Experience abroad is desirable.
  • Experience in supervising students is desirable.
