52 Faculty of Chemistry
Startdate: 01.01.2026 | Working hours: 40 | Collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc)
Limited until: 31.12.2026

Explore and teach at the University of Vienna, where over 7,500 brilliant minds have found a unique balance of freedom and support. Join us if you’re passionate about groundbreaking international research and academic excellence. Ready to be part of our team? Let’s shape the future together!

Your personal sphere of play:

The Faculty of Chemistry is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Scientist to join the NMR Centre and the Institute of Organic Chemistry. The successful candidate will oversee the operations of the advanced NMR core facility while actively contributing to the research and teaching activities of the Institute of Organic Chemistry. This is an exciting opportunity to engage in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research in organic and molecular chemistry, supporting and developing NMR-based methodologies, while managing state-of-the-art instrumentation. The position is initially limited to one year with the option of subsequent permanent employment.

Your future tasks:

  • Operation and management: Oversee the daily operations of the NMR core facility, with responsibility for personnel, scheduling, and budget management.
  • User and research support: Maintain and develop relations with internal and external users, providing scientific guidance and fostering collaborations—particularly within the Institute of Organic Chemistry.
  • Instrumentation management: Maintain, develop, and troubleshoot high-end NMR spectrometers (400–700 MHz, solution- and solid-state NMR, EPR, Prodigy and He-Cryo units), ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Method development: Develop and optimize pulse programs and parameter sets for organochemical, biochemical, and materials applications; support the implementation of full automation workflows.
  • Infrastructure maintenance: Maintain and troubleshoot the associated IT infrastructure (Linux and Windows systems), as well as gas and cryogenic systems (He recovery, gas and liquid gas supply for the NMR Centre and the Faculty of Chemistry).
  • Teaching and training in NMR spectroscopy and organic chemistry: Contribute to teaching activities within the Faculty of Chemistry, with a focus on applying NMR spectroscopy and supervision of teaching events at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
  • Facility management: Manage budgets, monitor facility usage, and maintain the web-based facility management software to ensure transparent and efficient operation.
  • Scientific development: Stay abreast of advances in magnetic resonance and implement best practices to support the Faculty’s and Institute’s evolving research needs.
  • Administrative engagement: Contribute to administrative tasks related to research, teaching, and institutional development within both the Institute of Organic Chemistry and the Faculty’s NMR Core Facility.
  • The position focuses on supporting and developing research infrastructure rather than establishing an independent research line.

This is part of your personality:

•    Ph.D. or equivalent experience in chemistry or a related field.

•    Extensive hands-on experience with NMR, EPR, DNP spectrometers and techniques.

•    Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot instrumentation.

•    Excellent communication and organizational skills to collaborate with diverse research groups.

•    Excellent knowledge of German and English (C1)

•    Team player and high social/communicative skills

Join us in advancing scientific discovery through NMR spectrometry!

What we offer:

Work-life balance: Our employees enjoy flexible working hours, remote/hybrid and/or part-time work (upon agreement).

Inspiring working atmosphere: You are a part of an international academic team in a healthy and fair working environment.

Good public transport connections: Your workplace in the center of beautiful Vienna is easily accessible by public transport.

Internal further training & Coaching: Opportunity to deepen your skills on an ongoing basis. There are over 600 courses to choose from – free of charge.

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 4.932,90 (14 times a year for senior scientists postdoctoral) increases, if we can credit professional experience. The position is initially limited to one year with the option of subsequent permanent employment.

Equal opportunities for all: We welcome every additional/new personality to the team!

It is that easy to apply:

  • With your scientific curriculum vitae
  • With a letter of Intent
  • With your detailed description of NMR know-how
  • With your list of publications
  • With your summary of research interests (max. 1 p.)
  • Doctoral Degree
  • Contact details of persons who could provide reference letters
